cbs2chicago.com - Museum Of Contemporary Art Director To Retire
Despite his initial distaste for the building, Fitzpatrick - whose career has included being president and CEO of EuroDisney in Paris, dean of the school of arts at Columbia University and an elected member of the Baltimore City Council - was impressed by the museum's board of trustees.
While the new Josef Paul Kleihues-designed building near the historic Water Tower increased the museum's square footage by nearly seven times, it also boosted costs, and the museum was "financially vulnerable," said Helen Zell, chairwoman of the board of trustees.
Fitzpatrick is a former dean of the Columbia University School of Arts in New York, and a former CEO of EuroDisney in Paris.

The museum announced its intention to relocate to the site of the Chicago Avenue Armory in 1988, after rejecting Mayor Richard M. Daley's offer of the Chicago Cultural Center, a city landmark and fiscal albatross which the local government had been trying to unload for some time.
Perhaps to lure viewers into the museum's future home before the Armory itself was destroyed, the MCA recently used the structure as the site for "Art at the Armory.
"Art at the Armory" consisted of 18 projects that occupied the 75,000-square-foot facility, one of the city's few remaining monuments of 19th-century architecture.

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago: Collective Vision
It is said that art reveals the heart of humankind, architecture the soul of civilization.
In his essay "Josef Paul Kleihues: Chicago and Berlin," art and architecture critic Franz Schulze considers the conceptual framework of Kleihues's design for the MCA, as well as the architect's adaptive reuse of the Hamburger Bahnhof train station to house Berlin's Museum of Contemporary Art.
The sum of these parts is a fascinating volume that thoroughly examines the very idea of an art museum according to its corresponding ideal: presenting, interpreting, and collecting the art of our time for a diverse audience.

Even the other fungi in the show, recognizable from their caps and stems, have papery gills too thin to be separated by stubby fingers.
The proximity of Shine's early plant works to the real (and their distance from signs of human fabrication) brought squeals of pleasure when they first appeared, while the simple shift in context--from the natural history museum, where the artist was working, to the art gallery--provided another level of meaning, a relation to real life.
His fungi stink of art and art school, and his copulating wasps (actually drawings of wasps), scanned, combined, layered, and colored, are minimonsters many times removed (through linear abstraction and mechanical reproduction) from their referents.
