In 1979, at a political fundraising event at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Councilman Joel Wachs, and local philanthropist Marcia Simon Weisman happened to be sitting at the same table.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in downtown Los Angeles is home to almost 5,000 artworks created since 1940, including masterpieces by classic contemporary artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Diane Arbus, and Andy Warhol, and inspiring new works by emerging and mid-career artists from Southern California and around the world.

 Contemporary Editions
Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) distinguishes itself by serving as a laboratory for open, artistic experimentation and creative expression, where artists—including under- represented, newly emerging, as well as established artists—have the freedom and the opportunity to take risks.
When Kelley moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1970’s to attend the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, several of his first public performances and exhibitions occurred at LACE including “The Little Girls Room” where Kelley exhibited props, drawings, photographs, writings and an environmental audiowork.
In 1998, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles unveiled one of his largest projects to date -- 4166 Sea View Lane, a house in the Mount Washington area of Los Angeles that the artist designed, built, and in which he resides.

At the same time, several highly visible government funded art projects came under attack and prompted a debate in the general public about the role of public art, the responsibility of artists to the communities in which their art is placed, and the question of tax funding of the arts.
The language of the contemporary American public sphere is, according to this work of art, the rhetoric of selling survival in a world in which people (regardless of their political persuasion) feel that their identities, security, and way of life is under fire.

A lightning rod and a scandal--that's what the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's "Helter Skelter: L.A. Art in the '90s" is supposed to be, I think.
Megan Williams offers cartoons in which everything is a blur of juggling that seems to express the speed-up and turnover of contemporary life, while Raymond Pettibone wallpapers one room with obsessive cartoonlike sketches with enigmatic captions that suggest existential angst.
One thing one can say against the exhibition is that its predictive subtitle "L.A. Art in the '90s" has all the hubris of a big institution trying to steal the fire of ideas from the whole L.A. art scene and the many artists and smaller institutions that constitute its network.

Two recent exhibits at the Whitney Museum, however, one of which travels to Los Angeles and Washington D.C., make the claim that Ruscha’s practice as a whole is run through with the tropes of photography and that he, in fact, approaches his work with a kind of “photographic vision” particularly evident in his drawings.
The Los Angeles installation of the exhibit benefits from the addition of Chocolate Room and the Stains portfolio, then, by resisting the easy comparisons between illusionism and the photograph available to viewers of the show at the Whitney when it coincided with Ed Ruscha and Photography.
What gets lost in interpreting Ruscha as a kind of photographer-in-spite-of-himself, is the way his art, often with wit and humor, suspends an image between its status as an idea and its presence in a medium, luring the viewer into deeper reflection on just what it means to look at an picture.
