Outside in the old churchyard is a beautiful garden, featuring two wonderful tombs - that of William Bligh (of bread fruit and Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and also the Tradescants' tomb (father and son Ð the wonderful sixteenth and seventeenth century gardeners) which is the one with all the skulls.
Technically outside the gardens in an area known as the KingÕs Garden are two gems:Êa balustraded sunken garden with flat formal lawns framed by flower beds, and a T shaped pool and fountain reminiscent (to me) of the 1930 English murder mystery.
The garden has a semi-formal layout, with geometrical beds bordered with painted rail iron work, gravelled pathways with trellised arches, stone seats in trellised arbours, wooden seats brightly painted and whimsical statutes of mythological creatures brightly painted and often on the top of green and white (a la barber) poles.

The Museum of Garden History is based in the deconsecrated parish church of St Mary-at-Lambeth adjacent to Lambeth Palace on the south bank of the River Thames in London, located on Lambeth Road.
In 1976 John and Rosemary Nicholson traced the tomb of the two 17th century royal gardeners and plant hunters John Tradescant father and son to the churchyard, and were inspired to create the Museum of Garden History.
In the early 1980s, a 17th century style knot garden planted with authentic plants of the period was created in the churchyard.

There are several wells underneath the Museum's property along with other cess pits, all of varying dates so it is not inconceivable that some of the early residents of Ceely House must have been drinking water contaminated by the cess pits.
If you look at the rear wall of the Museum, near to the modern pergola, a roof line shows where a relatively modern toilet block once stood and the drains for this were uncovered during the recent refurbishment.
The climate within the garden is very mild and is helped by being heated by the out-take vent for the heating system within the former church halls which can be seen on the wall.

 History of the British Museum, England royalty-free image
The British Museum was founded in 1753 by an Act of Parliament to purchase (from the profits of a state lottery) the Harleian manuscript and Sir Hans Sloane's Collections and to add them to the Cottonian manuscript (transferred to the public in 1702) in a suitable repository.
The present Museum was designed by Robert Smirke (afterwards Sir Robert) in 1823 and, beginning with the King's Library (east wing) and concluding with the demolition of Montagu House and the erection of the present south front, was complete by 1852.

Opened in the late 1970’s the Museum of Garden history is sited in the old 14th century church of St Mary-at-Lambeth.
The museum was opened by the Tradescant Trust, a charitable trust named after the Tradescant family who were plant collectors and gardeners to Charles I. John Tradescant (1570-1638), and his son, introduced many new plants to Britain, including Acacia and Lilac.
They created a garden next to the church, filled with all the new plants that they found on their travels, and not just plants; they also brought back snakes, fish, and all sorts of birds.
