The focus of the University of Manchester's celebrations was the Launch Event, held at the Bridgewater Hall, at 3.15 p.m.
Manchester Computing (in the same building) also held an open day, and visitors were also encouraged to visit the exhibitions at the Manchester Museum (across the road) and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (by free shuttle bus).

The museum used to be located on Grosvenor St to the south of the city centre, and had close ties with UMIST, having mostly grown out of the Department of History of Science and Technology.

This section of the museum smells of old style engine oil and is known as the power hall - The Power Hall contains working examples of gas, oil, hot-air and diesel engines, made by local companies.
It is actually in the oldest passenger railway buildings in the world and exhibits tells the story of the history, science and industry of Manchester - the world's first industrial city.
They do have special exhibitions which usually have an entry charge but the rest of the museum is free which is great as there is loads to see.
