The South African Museum was founded on 10 June 1825 by a Proclamation of the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset, "for the reception and classification of the various objects of the Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Kingdoms which are found in South Africa".
The Museum is concerned with the collection, care and classification of scientific material, with research and publication and presents the knowledge gained to the general public by way of displays and lectures.
Museum collections are thus documented examples of animals and plants, living and extinct, known to Man and of man's past and present cultures.

 Metropolitan Museum - Wood Work
THE art of the woodworker was barely illustrated until the Georges Hoentschel Collection was placed on exhibition, covering work of the Gothic period and of the 18th century.
To indicate the breadth of choice we may turn to some Arabian woodwork, with ivory inlay; a carved and gilded wooden stairway, Spanish work ; and Persian work in the doors from the Palace of Ispahan, which was built by Shah Abbas (1587-1628), one of the most enlightened and progressive rulers of that time.
One of the latest additions to the Museum's treasures has been a magnificent Chinese twelve-fold screen, of the K'ang-hsi period (1662-1722), which is a masterpiece in colour, design, and technique.

Refurbishment work at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery was stopped by campaigners from Greenpeace this week, who were protesting over alleged use of rainforest timber.
Almost 100 activists from the NGO’s ‘Forest Crime Unit’ descended on the museum and removed packs of the timber, which was set to be used as flooring, leaving FSC-certified wood as a replacement.
Work on the gallery, which is the UK’s most popular museum outside of London, is being funded by the National Lottery.

The ancient art of enameling, today almost a lost art form, was refined in Zurab Tsereteli’s homeland, the Republic of Georgia.
Included in the Museum's collection are three types of vivid enamels (see photo) modeled after the Good Defeats Evil Sculpture, created by Tsereteli to commemorate the historic signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

When two Native American house posts from the Burke Museum’s collection made the long journey to southeast Alaska in July, it was a homecoming of sorts.
The house posts are just the latest—and most dramatic—example of an ongoing effort by the Burke Museum to repatriate Native American artifacts to their original owners, primarily through the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), a federal law passed in 1990.
And the museum continues to work closely with more than 30 tribes in Washington, helping them review artifacts and plan for their care after they are returned.
