The Art Fund is celebrating the success of its Northern Ireland pilot project with the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which has helped museums in the region add many works of art to their collections.
The Art Fund chose Northern Ireland in particular for this initiative because out of all the UK regions, it receives the most limited government funding for acquisitions.
In June 2003, the Art Fund announced that it had set up a pilot project to encourage museums and galleries in Northern Ireland to enhance their collections, with the help of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK.

There are over 2,500 museums in the UK and there are no statutory provisions (apart from the nationals) to determine how museums should be established and operated.
The result of a museum’s participation in the program is documentary evidence that it has been judged by the profession as operating according to current standards and practices and is publicly accountable.
Museums can work through all five areas in 1 year or alternatively can take one area a year and complete the overall programme in 5 years.
