The Musi River is a river which passes through the city of Hyderabad in India.
A number of bridges cross the river; the oldest, called "Purana Puul"(literally meaning old bridge) was built during the 16th century by the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda.
This river's claim to fame is its significance in the birth of the city of Hyderabad.

Originating from the western flanks of the Western Ghats near Mahabaleshwar, Krishna is the fourth largest river basin in the country.
Musi, Krishna's tributary on the west of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, is in a bad shape with nearly 350 mld of polluted water and sewage originating from the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad flowing into it.

The ambitious Musi River Conservation Project got the Central Government nod under the National River Action Plan of the Ministry of Environment and Forests one full year back.
According to the HMWSSB studies, the BOD concentration in the Musi water was as high as 60 to 117 mg/litre in the city limits.
The project envisages collecting and diverting the huge volume of domestic sewage and industrial effluents from 18 nalas flowing into Musi and treating them in five proposed sewage treatment plants to be located in different parts of the city and letting the treated sewage into Musi after it meets the river disposal standards.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board is awaiting clearance of its proposal to clean up the Musi river, a tributary of Krishna river, flowing across the city.
The river is highly polluted as 500 million litres of sewerage is discharged into the river every day.
A pipeline is proposed to be laid from Pattancheru, the highly polluted industrial belt, to direct all effluents into the river.

 Rescue divers impeded by river
The Boeing 737-300 crashed into the Musi River on Friday, halfway through a flight from Jakarta to Singapore.
Divers groped their way through the opaque water to locate the wreckage, but Police Sgt. Husen Achmad said they were having trouble opening the doors of the plane.
Welding tools were being brought in to help pry the doors loose, and divers said they intended to cut their way into the jet today.

An alliance of nongovernmental organizations accused PT Pusri of polluting the Musi when thousands of fish were found dead in the river last March and numerous people living on the river's banks reported suffering from skin diseases beginning last August.
The one delivered to the city administration shows the river pollution is being caused by the fertilizer company's waste water while the other one released to the public says the company has treated its waste water in accordance with the law," he said.
