Musically, 311 is without a doubt the most original and kick-ass band there currently is. But unlike most of my other favorite bands, 311's lyrics are very meaningful.
On the morning of the day the album was released, I had a dream with a vision of an endless blue field and the oval 311 symbol faded into view as it ended.
Each 311 album is great for what it is, and I enjoy each of them as a stage in the evolution of a powerful musical force.

The whole album has a slightly aggressive streak to it in comparison to their other albums but when they go mellow, they do so in a big way.
311 was doing the hybrid style of rap and rock (and several other styles of music) before anyone else, in the late 80's.
Their unique blend of musical styles is so apparent on this CD, and the energy on it is no less than it is at one of their concerts.

The sixth album, From Chaos is a perfect example of maturity, musicality, and patience.
This album was, at the time, a new beginning for 311.
The album ends with the song "I'll Be Here Awhile," written by Nick Hexum at age 20, forecasting the ups and downs of both his music and his life, keeping positive about the future, as his fans continue to do.

'Music', their first full length album that was released back in 1992, was the first that I scooped up.
What I really love about this album, straight up over the other 311 albums, is that the beats and mixes of each genre of music they bring into 'Music' is so unique and very well put together.
While the other albums they've put out over the years since then are very good, with a different style to each one, 'Music' is the smartest when it comesto lyrics and beats.

The band hit the road in support of the record and was temporarily sidelined when their touring RV caught on fire and exploded on the shoulder of the highway.
After the success of the "311" album (which is now triple Platinum), 311 released a long form home video called "Enlarged to Show Detail" containing live concert footage, interviews, videos, backstage footage, etc. To make it a unique item, 311 bundled the video with a 5 song EP containing outtakes from the "311" cd.
And in October of 1999, 311 released their fifth cd "Soundsystem" which debuted at #9 and toured extensively in the US and Japan.

The recording of this album has taken a while, this is true, but the proof is in the pudding.
And that being said, we listened to half of the album while still putting together the final touches on the ones that were left.

Being their debut, this isn't as experimental as later albums, but the combo of rock-rap and funk on here is very solid.
I've read quite a few of the reviews of 311's music posted by fans of the band on Amazon, and first and foremost let me agree with the general consensus: this album is one of the best by this group.
But any REAL 311 fan was there from the beginning and was around to correct the losers who think that the self-titled was the debut album.

When I get 311 singer SA on the phone for an interview, he’s hanging out on the shores of Lake Michigan on a nice summer day in Milwaukee, gearing up to play a show later that night.
It’s also the first album they’ve made at the Hive, the Hollywood recording studio they bought two years ago and have been refurbishing ever since.
But 311 have been playing down their hip-hop influence in recent years, and the new album continues in that direction.

311: From Chaos - PopMatters Music Review
311 found a formula that worked in '92 and just stuck with it, as a dozen other rap-rockers zipped right past them.
The band seems vaguely aware of this as S.A. raps, "Makin that hybrid music back in '90 now it's on ya / I hear we were the model for the band you front we spawned ya".
311 did inspire a wave of genre-bending musicians, but with ridiculous lyrics like "Listen to the drummer just listen to the strings / Listen to the DJ just rappin and things", they have no hopes of keeping up with a style that is slowly dying out anyways.

Eclectic rock outfit 311 began to hit its stride with this sophomore effort.
311 scoffs at categorical definitions throughout the disc, giving no credence to the commonly accepted definitions of rock, hip-hop, and the like.
Fortunately, the individual members all have the instrumental chops and the freewheeling sense of fun needed to make the pell-mell fusion work, and while the group would continue to refine its aesthetic and gain in popularity with future releases, GRASSROOTS remains one of their strongest and most defining efforts.

And somehow the Nebraska natives manage to keep it all together, infusing their songs with enough melody to bind all the heavy beats and distortion together.

Ska was formed in the 1960s when traditional Jamaican mento music was mixed with American R and B. The mainly instrumental ska music was brought to the masses of Jamaica through sound systems, or vans that blared recordings of it while driving through Kingston, the capital.
Rock steady, a type of music involving slower rhythms and more vocal concentration, evolved from ska.
This form of music, which allowed for more pop vocal groups, was combined with one of its predecessors, mento, to form reggae.
