		On the morning of the day the album was released, I had a dream with a vision of an endless blue field and the oval 311 symbol faded into view as it ended.
		Each 311 album is great for what it is, and I enjoy each of them as a stage in the evolution of a powerful musical force.

		The whole album has a slightly aggressive streak to it in comparison to their other albums but when they go mellow, they do so in a big way.
		311 was doing the hybrid style of rap and rock (and several other styles of music) before anyone else, in the late 80's.
		Their unique blend of musical styles is so apparent on this CD, and the energy on it is no less than it is at one of their concerts.

		This album is not as drastic a departure as Transistor was, or rap heavy like 311(eponymous) was.
		This is definitely my favorite 311 album since Music, and is worlds better than the albums between.
		In fact, depending on whom I was talking to, I might recommend this one as a first 311 album.

		Being their debut, this isn't as experimental as later albums, but the combo of rock-rap and funk on here is very solid.
		I've read quite a few of the reviews of 311's music posted by fans of the band on Amazon, and first and foremost let me agree with the general consensus: this album is one of the best by this group.
		But any REAL 311 fan was there from the beginning and was around to correct the losers who think that the self-titled was the debut album.

		311 found a formula that worked in '92 and just stuck with it, as a dozen other rap-rockers zipped right past them.
		The band seems vaguely aware of this as S.A. raps, "Makin that hybrid music back in '90 now it's on ya / I hear we were the model for the band you front we spawned ya".
		311 did inspire a wave of genre-bending musicians, but with ridiculous lyrics like "Listen to the drummer just listen to the strings / Listen to the DJ just rappin and things", they have no hopes of keeping up with a style that is slowly dying out anyways.

		Eclectic rock outfit 311 began to hit its stride with this sophomore effort.
		311 scoffs at categorical definitions throughout the disc, giving no credence to the commonly accepted definitions of rock, hip-hop, and the like.
		Fortunately, the individual members all have the instrumental chops and the freewheeling sense of fun needed to make the pell-mell fusion work, and while the group would continue to refine its aesthetic and gain in popularity with future releases, GRASSROOTS remains one of their strongest and most defining efforts.

		Being the album that blew them straight into mainstream automatically makes it suspicious, but the fact is that its only ok. All mixed up was a great single that made up for down which was good to listen to once at the most.
		While SA is good at his rap riffs this band is ultimatley a reggae,alternative group and anything that strays from that is bound to suck.
		311's self-titled album seems like an odd choice to be a commercial breakthrough, but then again, 311 has always seemed to me a little too-quirky to be mainstream.
