Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the English West Midlands.
The metropolitan area of which Birmingham is part is defined by the government as the West Midlands county, which also includes the city of Coventry and has a population of 2,579,200, but in practice includes parts of the surrounding counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire.
Unlike many other English industrial cities such as Manchester, industry in Birmingham was based upon small workshops rather than large factories or mills.

Before 1834 wire for instruments was made either from iron or brass, until Webster of Birmingham introduced steel wire.
Wire has been plated in gold, silver, and platinum to stop rusting and plated wire can still be bought, but polished wire is best.

Matt De Gennaro and Alastair Galbraith interview
His sensitivity to playing the wires may be a by-product of his general interest in the physics and mystery of the long wire; why it works, the sound, longitudinal vibrations, harmonics.
When the wires are taught and stroked with rosined fingers or a piece of leather, we send longitudinal vibrations through the wires to where the wires are attached, creating a natural resonator (unlike a transverse vibration with a bow on a violin string feathered at a right angle).
It does mean, however, that it is possible for a person to approach the wires for the first time and make a beautiful, interesting sound by simply stroking his of her fingers across the wires.

Wire even indulged in some high-class boogie; Strange, with the langour and decadence of the Velvet Underground, Reuters, as abrasive and jangling as T. Rex, and the hyper-distorted martial voodoobilly of the Cramps in Pink Flag.
The psychedelic sketches of Syd Barrett are immersed in the claustrophobic atmosphere of Map Ref 41 N 93 W and dilate uncontrollably in the spasmodic suspense of A Mutual Friend; a litany from beyond the grave, soaked in industrial neurosis, annuls the emotional slide.
Wire's six-song EP Read and Burn 01 (Pinkflag, 2002) returns them to the futuristic punk-rock of their beginnings (In the Art of Stopping, I Don't Understand, Comet), albeit with a new awareness of studio cut-up techniques and of the post-rock aesthetics (Germ Ship).

Wire: Read & Burn 01 [EP] (2002): Reviews
Warning his music is dangerous to drive on - you will speed and try to carve up every other vehicle on the road.
This is the first time Wire has ever sound generic, and in a way that's worse than a failed experiment: Taking a chance and failing (as Wire often did in the 80s) is more respectable than unambitious mediocrity (ie Read & Burn).
Wire's coldly distainful wit has allowed them to carry their bite into the '00s.

The third movement is a scherzo, a bitter, mocking dance of death, with various layers of music proceding in juxtaposed layers in the manner of Ives.
It is a kind of mad music theater, one performing version of this piece requires a page-turning "Butler" and several other "Servants," and the pianist sits on aq spring-supported platform where he also has access to cowbells.
Blending music with the theatrical, visual, and the literary arts, Kievman has unveiled a transparency to his music that relates to joy, pain, and occasionally, the absurd.

 QRD interview with Colin Newman
Wire of course is a band that has constantly re-invented itself from punk (you know that song every punk band covers “12XU”) to the roots of post punk and it’s evolution into art pop and then stuff that’s much harder to try and explain to someone who’s never heard it.
We also tend to eschew tribalism in music as "self-niching" is ultimately such a dead end street.
I hope you realise that rather unusually wire has a singer who historically tended to write the music rather than the words to songs.

The Wire #230. Autechre: The Futurologists.
Autechre's approach is strictly antithetical to most popular music, which is essentially either nostalgic (be it retro-derivative, mischievously postmortem or sentimentally redolent of bygone summers) or it's written with one eye on 'classic radio' posterity, overeager to familiarise itself with you, become the stuff of future revivals, flecked with associations and connotations.
Unlike many in the world of electronic music who are hard pressed and ill-equipped to convert their soundlab experiments into some show of creative work being done, Autechre thrive playing live.
As Booth once said, "The only music that's really futurist is that which hasn't been created yet." They generally insist on playing in near complete darkness, again to minimize unwanted visual associations and focus concentration entirely on the quicksilver motions of the music burrowing deep inside your head.

 Wire: Send (2003): Reviews
The legendary English band, now re-formed, reunited and reinvigorated, return with their first LP in over a dozen years, with a sound that recalls the punk energy of their 1970s albums while sounding completely modern.
Throughout Send, Wire strike the right compromise, pushing their songs to brink of chaos without ever allowing them to disintegrate.
It's no surprise that Wire still aspire to make complex, strange punk; the shocker is that the spine-tingling Send sounds fresher than the pop punk currently being generated by pups half their age.

RC Groups - How to straighten out music wire?
The wire, when just heated and air cooled, did bend on launches as it was too soft after heating it.
I've never tried it with music wire so I don't know how well it will work, but the best way to straighten long lengths of wire is to twist it under tension.
A few turns and the wire will be perfectly straight, and it tends to stiffen it even more than it was originally because of the twists.

The long wire is played indoors, ideally in a wooden structure, which would become the resonator for the wire when attached to the building.
The wire is then rubbed by resin-covered hands or bowed, which produces a deep drone that, as Galbraith once said, can be felt in the bones.
Galbraith and De Gennaro are simply bowing very long piano and violin wires which had been mounted throughout darkened art galleries, creating hypnotic acoustic drones that draw from Lucier's minimalist masterpiece "Music For A Long Thin Wire," though retain far more textural scrapes and dissonant overtones than found within Lucier's monotonal purity.

However the notion of sleeves "describing the music inside" is one Hiorthøy has little sympathy with: «Like everyone else I associate certain imagery with certain music,» he states, «but I don't know that that is necessarily good.

 Wire
One of the first wave of punk groups during the late 1970s, Wire was neither nihilistic in the Sex Pistols tradition or political like the Clash.
With their brief, caustic songs, they were closest to the Buzzcocks' brand of poppy punk, but their art-school leanings took them into more challenging and experimental territory.
The group's sound eventually progressed through dark, quirky dissonance to an ear-friendly brand of synth-pop, but Wire never lost its cheeky edge or palpable air of strangeness.

The music was like Blues Traveler meets They Might Be Giants meets ska/funk/rap rock meets Sugar Ray.
They took riffs from Steve Miller and jammed them up against Van Halen and "Kumbaya," all the while with Father Pickles' crotch area jammed up against his microphone, his hand, stage pillars, and, at the end of the night, a mop he rode like a blowup doll during a finale about the Lord.
