Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, flat surface, by cutting grooves into it.
Engravings continued to be common in newspapers and many books into the early (Click link for more info and facts about 20th century) 20th century, as they were long cheaper to mass reproduce than photo images.
Many classic (A token that postal fees have been paid) postage stamps were engraved, although the practice is now mostly confined to particular countries, and/or used when a more "elegant" design is desired and a limited color range is acceptable.

Canadian Sheet Music Before 1867 - Sheet Music from Canada's Past - Library and Archives Canada
The demand for battle music was met by such pieces as W. de Krifft's Siege of Quebec; the poignant ballad by Thomas Paine, On the Death of General Wolfe; and How Stands the Glass Around, by General James Wolfe himself, possibly written on the eve of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.
Printed music was required, however, for music teachers and their pupils, who were from the privileged minority where domestic music making was considered a proof of gentility.
Although music publishing appears to have been the least important of their various enterprises, the documents they have left behind nevertheless provide glimpses of a time in Canada's history when the idea of a larger nation was taking shape.

Music Engraving -- David Bailey Music Studio
"Engraving" isn't really the proper name for this service and neither is "typesetting" since nothing gets engraved on metal plates and no type is ever really set, but there isn't really a better term to use.
The use of computers to "engrave" music was begun about 30 years ago, but only in recent years has desktop computing allowed it to achieve a price point and a quality to be of great value to the musical world at large.
In the early days of desktop computer music notation software, the output was far better than much manuscript but it was still very far away from matching the beauty of a properly engraved score.
