The structure of Music for 18 Musicians is based on a cycle of eleven chords played at the very beginning of the piece and repeated at the end.

MUSIC FOR 18 MUSICIANS Steve Reich's breakthrough Music for 18 Musicians (1976) is constructed around a sensuous cycle of eleven chords.
With Music for 18 Musicians, Reich moved away from his minimalist roots, in favor of more elaborate musical technique and rhythmic augmentation.
Musically, it is a short "slow movement" on a mostly D dominant pedal supplied by the drone of the Hindenburg's engines.

After Reich's initial experiments with phase music, he moved on to exploring pulse -- music that had no relation to melody, but would repeat phrases of either one or several notes, increasing then decreasing in volume as long as the musician had the stamina.
When repeated with several musicians playing around one key and starting them off at different times, the result was a piece that continuously evolved, sounding like a night drive through a neon city with bright sounds appearing on the horizon, coming closer, then disappearing behind.
The original recording in 1978 on ECM records was a major step forward for Reich and legitimized his music beyond the experimentation of such works as "Violin Phase." Where the phase work felt insular and looped, Music for 18 Musicians stretches as far as the eye can see.

Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians" (ECM1129, 1978) remains his masterpiece, a 56 minute and 31 second immersion into mesmerizing rhythms that is slow to start but completely engrossing and immensely rich in its ultimate coloration.
The first and third pieces are quite similar to "Music for 18 Musicians," but the latter actually improves upon it with a smaller ensemble.
Certainly not the first techno piece in music history, it nonetheless remains perhaps the best evocation of the dynamism of the machine age, not in the manner of pile-driving brutalism, but romantic fascination with the beauty of steel and steam.

His music is a great study in counterpoint, which for all who don't know, is technique of two or more rhythms that play at the same time, but are in the same timbre.

Reich, Steve - Music for 18 musicians - Groove Unlimited
Music for 18 Musicians features, you guessed it, 18 musicians on pianos, woodwinds, female vocals and various mallet instruments.
Inspired by the richness of African and Indonesian percussion-based music, and hearing parallels between those cycling forms and his own explorations of repetition through tape music, Reich composed many percussive pieces, most notably 1970's Drumming.
18 Musicians examines some of the same techniques, especially the motif of shifting phase between layers of repeated patterns, but the expanded instrumentation allows this to build to an intoxicating lushness.

'Music for 18 Musicians' was a ground-breaking album which closed out the 1970s, and it took much of the audience that had been nurtured on Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet' and, before that, Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells'.
Although Reich's music is inherently rhythm-based, its dynamic textures are too complex and subtle for a simple drumloop to add anything new and interesting (the definition of a remix!).Stay with the originals......

The music of composer Steve Reich has had a powerful influence on a generation of American music, and Ensemble Modern?s new BMG Classics disc of four important works by Reich celebrates his work with timely recordings of two New York-themed works, City Life (1995) and New York Counterpoint (1985).
As if to underline the sharp urban edge in the music, City Life uses in its final movements samples of the cries of the firemen working at the World Trade Center in the wake of the bombing of 1993.

Performed by musicians, just as the title states, it actually might fall into what many would consider 'trance' music.
With vocals, stringed instruments, lots of percussive elements (vibraphone, gamelan, marimba, maracas), pianos, and clarinets, it's one of those pieces of music that you can trace back to as a starting point for not only individual artists, but genres as well.
While their were groundbreaking pieces both before and after it, it's one of those recordings that will envelope you if you allow it to.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Reich: Music for 18 Musicians at Epinions.com
Music for 18 Musicians came during a period where Reich began to experiment with using an all-human orchestra (and a large one at that) to take on his strange but strangely comforting music.
Overall, though, Music for 18 Musicians is a wonderful piece of Minimalism at it's best and is one of the best, in my opinion, from Reich's impressive catalog.
This is a great intro to Reich or a great piece to add to a collection if you're a fan of his other music and gives you a little taste of what it must be like to take a nap on a cloud.

His music is characterized by a strong, steady pulse and strictly diatonic and tonal harmonies.
The music is deeply "American" in its roots, with an unrelenting pulse and short, repeating melodic figures often compared to rock-and-roll and be-bop.
However, like other minimalist composers, Reich’s music is also largely influenced by extra-European forms and techniques, generally viewed as a response to the largely academic, elitist climate of new music in the 1950's and 60's.

NPR : The Thinking Man's Minimalist at 70
He took a snippet of speech (a recording of a preacher intoning the phrase "It's gonna rain"), looped it, phase-shifted it in layers over itself and transformed it into an oddly beautiful wash of sound.
For Reich, that experiment opened a door into a new form of expression in music that would eventually be tagged as "minimalism." It was also the gateway to what are now considered his masterpieces, such as the hypnotic "Music for 18 Musicians," featured on Phases, a new five-disc retrospective of Reich's music.
The hour-long piece is performed without pause, but Reich divides it up into 11 sections, flanked by an intro and outro labeled "Pulses." For maximum effect, the piece should be heard in its entirety, in order to capture the full complement of drama, color and urgency.

Music for 18 Musicians is a vast, minimalist piece, in many ways the culmination of Reich's exceptional career, and certainly a sort of summing-up of his earlier works such as Violin Phase (1967) and Four Organs (1970).
