The first major study of the music of Bashkortostan appeared in 1897, when ethnographer Rybakov S.G. wrote Music and Songs of the Ural's Muslims and Studies of Their Way of Life.
The National Symphonic Orchestra of the Bashkortostan Republic was founded in 1992 under the leadership of Tahir Kamalov.
Quray, the symbol of Bashkir music is used in modern popular music too.

THE face of President Murtaza Rakhimov is everywhere in Bashkortostan, an autonomous Russian republic that he rules with an iron fist from his imposing palace high above Ufa, the capital.
Rakhimov, the former head of one of the largest Soviet oil refineries and an ethnic Bashkir, was elected in 1993 and has since turned the region into a family fiefdom.
Whereas in Bashkortostan the Russian president fared badly in the first round of the elections, he won the second in a surprise comeback - which may have had something to do with reports that ballots in favour of Gennady Zyuganov, the communist challenger, were seen floating down a river.

Paradoxically, the best known region of Russia for music lovers all over the world could be the distant republic of Tuva (could you find it on the map?), thanks to artists such as  Huun-Huur-Tu, internationally known for their overtone throat singing.  Of these artists, I like Sainkho most.  
Peter Gabriel (known to many for his work in Genesis) is perhaps one of the most influential people in the field of world music.
 My personal interest in world music began with this album.  I still recall the shock of listening to some of the tracks from this album for the first time.   The best time to listen to it: when you study for a test.

Among the researchers we should pick out another great scientist of Bashkir musical folklore Lebedinskiy L.N. He came to Bashkortostan at the end of 1930 especially with the purpose of recording Bashkir folk songs.

Bashkortostan is actually a fascinating place, and I for one (perhaps the only one, aside from plexi and mcwetboy's friend—great article, by the way) am very curious to see how they work out their ethnic situation.
The Jamestown Foundation has an out-of-date but very informative article on the political/ethnic situation; there's a tripod site with language links, and a geocities site with some Bashkortostan links, most of which are broken or otherwise useless, but that's Bashkortostan for you.

The most commonly cited source when I began my research in the early 1990s was translated from Tuvan Folk Music, a book published in 1964 by A. Aksenov, a Russian composer who surveyed Tuvan Khoomei styles in the 1940-50s.
Those familiar with Tuvan music have noticed that often entire songs are sung with this voice.
