Basques in DC: A friend of mine from Seattle, Argia Beristain Dougherty, has recently moved to Washington, DC, where she is trying to gather the Basques in DC for an evening of food, friends and fun.
The Basque associations of the islands are approaching two very important anniversaries: the 25th anniversary of their festival as well as the 100th anniversary of their Fronton.
In this interview, conducted over email, I asked her about growing up Basque, her plans for the Center, and her views on what it means to be Basque and the role that the Basque diaspora has in the future of the Basque Country.

The country is located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, on both slopes of the Western Pyrenees that separate Spain and France.

In my country people are tortured, nwspapers are closed, and innocent people are taken to jail just because everything that smells too basque is terrorism for the government (now things are changing a bit).

The José Miguel de Barandiarán Chair in Basque Studies has been established at the University of California at Santa Barbara, thanks to the generosity of the Autonomous Basque Government (Eusko Jaurlaritza) and the Federación de Cajas de Ahorros Vasco-Navarras.
The founding of the Chair was celebrated on November 12, 1993 with an inaugural lecture entitled “The Basques: From Stone-Age to the Present” by Juan Bautista Avalle-Arce, the first holder of the Barandiarán Chair.

I was enrolled to his class in Spain and I studied with him 3 years in Spain and for four months in Moscow (to prepare for the Moscow Competition in 1995).
Their works have helped create the situation, that the accordion can be scheduled at the most important festivals of contemporary music.
After the concert a woman from the audience came to congratulate us with the concert and she said that the sound was perfect, the technique was amazing etc. but then she said that the music was horrible!.

The Foundation is principally funded by the subsidies received from the Basque Government - Eusko Jaurlaritza, and by the amounts paid by students enrolled at the Higher School and by any other legally valid contributions.
The requirements of entrance to the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country, musikene, are those established in the currently existing regulations on access to higher music studies, with no discrimination of any kind for reasons of birth, sex, creed, religion, opinion or any other personal or social condition or circumstance.
