Brittany is on the northwest coast of France and is a region unique in that country in its Celtic cultural derivation.
Brittany has been inhabited by the Celts since about the 6th century, and were independent for a time, though not united politically or, in all likelihood, culturally.
Brittany hosts annual rock and pop festivals, the biggest being the Festival des Vieilles Charrues (held in late July in Carhaix, Finistère), the Route du Rock (mid-August, Saint-Malo) and the Transmusicales of Rennes, held in early December.

I've found that Breton music has a very unique sound that is quite different in some ways from the music of the other Celtic lands.

Traditional dance music in Brittany--Bretagne in French--has historically been played on a variety of reed instruments, especially the bombard, an oboe-like instrument, and the biniou, the local form of the bagpipe.
The usual musical accompaniment for a dance was a couple de sonneurs, a bombard-biniou duo where both instruments play the melody line over a constant drone from the biniou.
The world was introduced to the music of Brittany through the recordings of Alan Stivell, a folklorist, multi-instrumentalist and singer who began recording in the 1960s.

There is a lot of English folk music, but my tastes to date favor only a small sample of it, and much of that comes from the northern edge of England, particularly the area of Northumbria on the border of Scotland.
Eliza's musical knowledge and command of the material is obvious, and I find her arrangements, however radical, to be intelligent and not the least contrived, in contrast to much celtic rock.
I think of traditional music as people familiar with, and respectful of, a tradition, speakng musically to each other with passion and honesty about their lives and concerns.

More than the vocal tradition, the modern instrumental music of Brittany is deeply influenced by music from the other Celtic countries, largely because of the pan-Celtic sentiments of the revivalists.
