THE GREATNESS OF CRETAN MUSIC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
People compose music, but when this music becomes particular to a remote geographical location, particularly when such location is historically significant, owing to the actions of its inhabitants through the centuries, then the human factor merges with the location itself.
The origins of music in Crete, and Greece in general, is associated in myth with the birth of the father of gods, Zeus, on Crete.
Although Cretan music was originally influenced by its contacts with eastern cultures, from 13th century onwards a new wave of musical trends of western origin established a foothold on the island as a more positive consequence of Latin expansionism.

Crete (Greek: Κρήτη Kríti; Turkish: Girit; Latin: Candia; Creta) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea.
Crete has an elongated shape - 260 km from east to west and 60 km at its widest, although the island is narrower at certain points, such as in the region close to Ierapetra where it has a width of only 12 km.
To the north Crete borders with the Sea of Crete (Greek: Κρητικό Πέλαγος), to the south it is bordered by the Libyan Sea (Greek: Λιβυκό Πέλαγος), to the west the Myrtoon Sea, to the east the Karpathion Sea.

Sound Bytes music review: Nonie Crete.
As a songwriter, Crete captures the characteristic spirit of Irish music, the essence that makes it both vital and unique, so that, while her songs are written in Ontario, they are unmistakably Irish.
Where the music before was clearly folky, this new release has moved forward and expanded so that, while still folk-music, it has a broader, more universal sense to it and a more pop sensibility.
If Nonie Crete has grown this much in just one year, expect her to be an influential force in Canadian folk music for years to come.
