This is an ambitious 3 CD set of "Music of Eastern Europe" (albeit, just folk music), a region they define as stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans, a huge area for any single exploration, but it is handled with both expansive vision and an eye for detail.
It is a compilation of darkly hued music from Portugal, which seems to carry the wellspring of sadness that marbles the music of its former colonies, such as Cape Verde, Angola and even usually exuberant Brazil.
You may have heard hints of this in some of the music of Marta Sebestyen, but here's the real thing as it is still played by traditional musicians in their own towns and villages.

Musically preoccupied as I always am, and inspired by my recent adventure at the Ukrainian church in Cook's Creek, Springfield, Manitoba, I thought of researching about the Rock music of Eastern European countries like Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
Their music is very guitar-based, in a style reminiscent of the '60s-popular instrumental band The Ventures, with a tinge of Punk ethos.
Music is indeed a loyal companion especially when one is in a place so far away from her home.

Aleksei Ribnikov's music for ''Junon and Avos'' is a similarly peculiar artifact, a Soviet reflection of Andrew Lloyd Webber, from nearly rock to light-classical appropriations.
In the Eastern bloc, many rock musicians seem to come not from the lower or middle classes (as the American rock mythos demands) but from the intelligentsia; they're young people whose parents can bring back records from Western trips and who have the cash to buy amplifiers.
On purely musical grounds, European classical influence was at its peak in 1970's pomp-rock, and in the Eastern bloc, that influence is a lot closer to the local heritages than is the increasingly rhythmic, less melodic rock of the 1980's.

Ankica Petrovic is a specialist in the music of Eastern Europe, in particular of her native Bosnia.
