Friends of the band in Inner Mongolia said Chinese authorities feared the band might inflame nationalistic sentiments among young ethnic Mongolians if the performance went on as scheduled.
Inner Mongolian youths told the band members that their music helped them to preserve their native language, he said.
One of the group’s popular songs, “Born in Mongolia,” describes a vast “land of great legendary heroes,” a land “without borders,” and a land bearing the “stamp of Heaven.” Not something that would blow the roof off in most rock ‘n’ roll strongholds around the world.

From lecturing at Cambridge University, to advising the BBC's Ray Mears on Mongolia, her own roots lie in English traditional fiddle (and singing) - and the legendary 70's folk rock band Mr Fox.
The most well-known roots music of Inner Asia is throat singing (overtone-singing): the remarkable vocal technique in which a single individual produces more than one note at the same time.
Inner Asian musicians play two- and three-stringed lutes and fiddles, long zithers, shaman’s drums and a range of pipes, using techniques that mirror the same drone-melody aesthetic as in overtone-singing.

Khoomei almost became extinct in China but was revived by artists from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region who went to the Republic of Mongolia to learn the traditional singing technique, and brought it back to China.
She mounted the stage of Shanghai Grand Theatre, pulling a lame leg, singing her repertoire, songs adapted from Mongolian folk music, and won thundering applause from the audience.
Another important part of the exhibition is the rock paintings from Inner Mongolia, which record the history of the nomadic people.

Surrounded by mountains and with a harsh climate, Tibet has evolved it's own music and culture. This album is a recording of Tibetan Buddhist liturgy performed by the priest of Namgyal Monastery.
