 AOL Music: Kansas : BIO
Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late '70s; though typically dismissed by critics, many of the group's hits remain staples of AOR radio play lists to this day.
Kansas' self-titled debut LP appeared in 1974; while only mildly successful, the group toured behind it tirelessly, and their fan base grew to the point that their third effort, 1975's Masque, sold a quarter of a million copies.
In the wake of 1980's Audio-Visions, Kansas began to splinter; both Hope and Livgren became born-again Christians, the latter issuing the solo venture Seeds of Change, and their newfound spirituality caused divisions within the band's ranks.

Fine Line Features | Kansas City The Music
For the first half of this century, Kansas City was the crossroads of commerce for one-sixth of America.
One Kansas City specialty was the jam session, with its all-night "cutting contests." No city engaged in these sessions with such enthusiasm and competitive spirit, with many jams divided into contests of the first, second and third class, like sporting events.
One of the highlights of KANSAS CITY is the recreation of the fabled cutting contest that went on when Coleman Hawkins (Craig Handy), then on the road, stopped in Kansas City to take on Lester Young (Joshua Redman) and Ben Webster (James Carter).

classical music - andante - kansas city symphony fears that new hall will be too small
The Kansas City Symphony Orchestra is glad it will get its own concert hall under a revised plan for the city's new performing arts center.
And outside experts contacted by the newspaper said they were concerned that the hall would not be large enough for major works and that it would limit the orchestra's ability to build audiences.
The original scheme for the Kansas City facility included an 1,800-seat orchestra hall, but later versions of the plan called for a multi-purpose facility that would house opera and ballet productions as well as the Kansas City Symphony.
