Karakol (fl wrist in Kyrgyz) is a city of about 75,000, located near the eastern tip of lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan and about 150 km from the Kyrgyz-Chinese border.
A Russian military outpost since about 1860, Karakol grew in the 19th century after explorers came to map the peaks and valleys separating Kyrgyzstan from China.

Today we began with music from the Turkish Alevi sufis with Sabahat Akkiraz (Long Distance) and that was followed by a classic recording by Mohammad Reza Lotfi and Mohamad Reza Shadjarian from their golden era of the seventies in Iran with Dastgah Segah (Iranian recording).
The music we heard today was Kurdish music from Iran for dozeleh and voice (Mahour), music from the Turkman Sahra in Iran (field recordings) in celebration of Persian New Year (the first day of Spring).
Other music was from North Indian vocalist, Lakshmi Shankar (Navras), from a London concert back in 1992, music of Quetzol (Vanguard), music from the Queen of the Gypsies, Esma Redzepova (Time Square), and dance music from the Orissa state of Indian (Arion).

The students and teachers there have come from special music schools across Central Asia -- and they are inspiring each other as they try to revive the ancient oral methods of teaching music that had been neglected under the Soviet system.
Almatov says his school also is using ancient teaching principles where masters called "ustads" pass on the music and legends of Kazakh folklore directly through oral instruction, rather than the modern European method of written notation introduced under the Soviet education system.
