Victor Alexandrovich Pokrovsky was choir director, translator, and music arranger for Metropolitan Sergius (Tikhomirov) of Japan, serving in that position at the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Tokyo, Japan) from 1924 until 1962, except for the World War II years and some of the decade following the war.

The history of 20th-century classical music in the U.S.A. revolves around a continuous series of attempts to formulate novel and especially American forms of musical expression, in part a struggle against the domination of European classical music and ideas, new or old.
It is difficult not to come to the conclusion that in terms of musical impact, and in the reflection of the wider human condition and the narrower expression of the ethos and ideas of the day, no American composer has yet matched their major European counterparts.
A major feature of American music is the long tradition of maverick experimental composers, from the hymn music of Henry Billings (1746-1800, in whom interest has been revived this century), who wrote an atonal hymn, to John Cage in the present day.

At present the project is directed by Wolpert and Markham from the Center for the Study of Early Asian and Middle Eastern Musics at the University of Arkansas.

It is even more remarkable that despite this eclecticism Griffes always retained his own musical identity and was one of the first American composers of his generation to ultimately break with European tradition and to find his own way out of the German-French orbit that dominated the American musical world before and during his lifetime.
Its musical life was dominated by Richard Strauss; it boasted several great music conservatories and two of the great opera houses of Europe, the Berlin State Opera and the Municipal Opera.
On April 2, 1919, the Modern Music Society of New York sponsored a concert of "Compositions by Charles T. Griffes." This was the second major concert in New York devoted solely to Griffes' music (the first was the MacDowell Club).
