Amazon.co.uk: Nebraska: Music: Bruce Springsteen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Nebraska is one of the most important rock albums of the 20th century.
It is the single true post-modern masterpiece in American music that remains within America (unlike the "foreign" influences of the Velvets in their prime etc.) The listener must not confuse Springsteen's talent and music with the image that came out in the 80's media.
Nebraska opens as it means to go on, with an understated tale of the more unknown scapes and peoples of this quiet American state in the title track, focusing much on the common man and the struggle for justice and close knit community.

Bruce Springsteen: Nebraska - All CDs $5.99 and Free Shipping at yourmusic.com
There is an adage in the record business that a recording artist's demos of new songs often come off better than the more polished versions later worked up in a studio.
But Bruce Springsteen was the first person to act on that theory, when he opted to release the demo versions of his latest songs, recorded with only acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica, and vocals, as his sixth album, "Nebraska".
"Nebraska"'s ten songs marked a departure for Springsteen, even as they took him farther down a road he had been traveling previously.

The band versions were recorded, but Springsteen sensed something missing; eventually, he became convinced that his demo tape, which he hadcarried around in a back pocket of his jeans for several days, had a spiritual wallop that he and the band couldn't recreate.
The songs on NEBRASKA form a bleak cycle about men on the run, from the law, from their fathers or from themselves, usually for reasons even they don't understand.
Whether strumming through "Atlantic City", picking out arpeggios on "Nebraska" or banging out a shuffle on "Open All Night" (a rare upbeat moment), Springsteen's lone acoustic guitar was all the accompaniment they needed, echoing their loneliness and isolation.

Nebraska, even with it's lack of the E Street Band, remains my favorite Bruce Springsteen album.
It's stripped down sound and the stories told through the lyrics, make the album Springsteen's most personal one up until The Ghost of Tom Joad, and even that doesn't hold a candle to this.
The songs bring out a real emotion in the listener, and you feel that pringsteen is the person he's singing about (or was at least there). It's an album that has to be heard to be believed, and I suggest you give it a try.
