French Polynesia came to the forefront of the world music scene in 1992, with the release of The Tahitian Choir's recordings of unaccompanied vocal Christian music called himene tarava, recorded by French musicologist Pascal Nabet-Meyer.
This form of singing is common in French Polynesia and the Cook Islands, and is distinguished by a unique drop in pitch at the end of the phrases, which is a characteristic formed by several different voices; it is also accompanied by steady grunting of staccato, nonsensical syllables.

French Polynesia (French: Polynésie française, Tahitian: Porinetia Farani) is a French "overseas collectivity" (French: collectivité d'outre-mer, or COM) with the particular designation of "overseas country" (French: pays d'outre-mer, or POM) in the southern Pacific Ocean.
It is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands, the most famous island being Tahiti in the Society Islands group, which is also the most populous island, and the seat of the capital of the territory (Papeete).
In 2002, 69% of the population of French Polynesia lived in the island of Tahiti alone.

HAWAIIAN music had been incorporating Western ideas for almost 200 years when Jack de Mello produced "Music of Hawaii: From the Missionaries to Statehood" in 1965.
De Mello's record label, Music of Polynesia, also launched the careers of the Brothers Cazimero, Keola and Kapono Beamer, and De Mello's son, record producer Jon, whose Mountain Apple label is heir to the Music of Polynesia catalog.
Mountain Apple released a cross-section of music from the "Music of Hawaii" series on CD earlier this year.
