Music of Taiwan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taiwan is densely-populated and culturally diverse, including a majority of Han Chinese, including the Holo and Hakka peoples and significant quantities of "Mainlanders", refugees who arrived with Chiang Kai-shek in the middle of the 20th century, and the minority of aboriginal peoples.
Holo folk music is most common today on the Hengchun Peninnsula in the southernmost part of the island, where performers sing accompanied by yueqin (moon guitar), which is a type of two-stringed lute.
Taiwanese enjoyment of popular music often manifests itself on a practical level with the national obsession for KTV, a variant of karaoke.

Where East meets West: contemporary Chinese music
From the beginning of the twentieth century, Chinese rulers had considered music, especially choral music, to be an excellent way of rallying the masses--an idea based on one of the principles of Confucius.
The melodies collected by civil servants working for the ministry of music were rewritten based on "the piano." Almost all traditional instruments belonging to various ethnic groups were therefore modified to accommodate this scale and its chords, particularly after the 1950s.
Taiwan quickly adopted Western music after World War II, in large part as a way of distinguishing its policy from that of communist China.

The population of Taiwan aborigines is about 345,000 (1991), only one sixty-sixth of the total population of Taiwan, but their living area, mostly mountainous, occupy more than half of this island.
Among the folk music of various cultures of archaic strata throughout the world, the music of Taiwan aborigines is doubtlessly the most advanced and diversified, forming a marvelous treasury.
Some scholars have even proposed a chronology for the arrival of the aboriginal tribes in Taiwan; for example, the Saisiat and Atayal tribes are thought to have arrived in Taiwan during the early ceramic period around.

Taiwan's Chang Hui-mei, who despite slipping somewhat in terms of her home-town popularity can still be considered the queen of popular music in Greater China, has a message for her many fans: "If you really value our efforts, please think twice before you buy a pirated copy of our music."
The theory is fairly solid: Taiwan can no longer compete in labor-intensive industries, and therefore must move into such cutting-edge, niche industries in order to exploit its geographic position, cultural affinities with China, and highly educated and hard-working population.
Taiwan, which boasted the second-largest music market in Asia in 1999, is now in fourth place behind Japan, South Korea, and India.

The systematic development of music therapy in Taiwan may be traced back to early 1990s, when a group of music professionals, receiving or being introduced to music therapy related training while studying abroad, returned to their native land and promoted the powerful educational/healthcare alternative.
The Taiwanese music therapy pioneers were able to reach the clients and their parents who had failed most conventional approaches and demonstrated eye-opening effectiveness of music therapy.
Since the development of music therapy in Taiwan is still in its infancy, the theoretical/philosophical orientation of music therapy practice and research is constantly readjusted to better accommodate cultural, social, and economic uniqueness of the society.
