Gubaidulina was born in Chistopol’ in Tatarstan of a Tatar father and a Russian mother.
She studied piano and composition at the Kazan’ Music Academy in Tatarstan from 1946 to 1949, and then at the Kazan’ Conservatory from 1949 to 1954.

The music featured sparse nasalsounding textures on the instrument, to which the musician chanted in an epic style with an equally nasal vocal sound, generally presenting highly ornamental melismas around one note.
It was very quiet and delicate, pointillistic music, which was barely audible, despite the fact that the musicians asked for the ventilator to be turned off during the performance.

During the last decade of the 20th Century and of the 2nd millennium I have organized a concert series of contemporary music in New York, called the "Bridge" Series, which was dedicated to performing new works by composers of various countries and continents, chiefly focusing on bridging together the musical cultures of Europe and America.
Nemtin's own music has been sadly neglected and not given its due exposure, both by the neglect of the composer and by the hostility of the Soviet authorities and the Composers' Union.
This concert, featuring Nemtin's piano and vocal-piano music, as well as video presentations and reminiscences by his friends, was the first concert devoted entirely to his music and a sequel concert is planned for October 28th, planned to take place at the Countess Shuvalova Hall in Moscow.

The cover promises that this is "a soothing, inspirational brew of exotic music steeped in the traditions of Asia's tea lands." Soothing it is. Perhaps I'm confused about what they call "tea lands," but I wasn't expecting music from Tatarstan in central Asia, or Persia, Pakistan and Turkey, for that matter.
And while Indonesian gamelan music is fascinating to watch in performance, on recording it can sound like garden-variety electronica -- Ujang Suryana's beautiful flute playing doesn't save "Kang Mandor" from sounding like synthesized clockwork.
