Welcome to Northern California's Auburn Symphony!
Although not a member of the group of nationalistic composers usually known in English-speaking countries as 'The Five', his music has come to be known and loved for its distinctly Russian character as well as for its rich harmonies and stirring melodies.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, a small town in present-day Udmurtia (at the time the Vyatka Guberniya under Imperial Russia), the son of a mining engineer in the government mines and the second of his three wives, Alexandra, a Russian woman of French ancestry.
Under Kündinger, Tchaikovsky's aversion to German music was overcome, and a lifelong affinity with the music of Mozart was seeded.

Music of Chechnya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pondur is the oldest of musical instruments of the Chechens, comprising of three chords and a wooden casing.
Being similar to the Russian balalaika, the difference lies in the casing: the pondur is rather long, is made of one solid block of wood and has a soft, rustling voice.
The first recordings of Chechen music were made by an exiled member of the Decembrist society in the middle of the 19th century.

Music of Hungary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The subsequent influence on neighboring countries' music is seen in the music of Slovakia and, with intervals of the third or second, in the music of the Czech Republic.
By the end of the 18th century, verbunkos was in use in opera, chamber and piano music, and in song literature, and was regarded as "the continuation, the resurrection of ancient Hungarian dance and music, and its success signified the triumph of the people's art".
Music was uniformly festive and optimistic, with every deviation arousing suspicion; this simplicity led to a lack of popular support from the public, who did not identify with the sterile approved styles.

Musically precocious, he began piano lessons at the age of five, and in a few months was already proficient at Friedrich Kalkbrenner's composition Le Fou.
After graduating, Tchaikovsky was approached by Rubinstein's brother Nikolai to become professor of harmony, composition, and the history of music.

The greater part of his music was written for his own instrument, the piano, in a characteristic idiom that derives some inspiration from contemporary Italian opera, much from the music of Poland, and still more from his own adventurous approach to harmony and his own sheer technical ability as a player.
Like his music, the man himself was widely loved, but his inner life was fraught with sufferings, confusions and a deep vein of self-doubt.
It was only in his music, both as pianist and composer, that he was able to release his inner emotions.

This school is remarkable for having blended the two opposite efforts: the aspiration to retain the traditional folklore and to preserve its environment is accompanied by a strong desire to make use of the methods of avant-garde art and thus to apply the fruit of the technological revolution in art.
For the members, recording folklore music was, in a way, another ethnofuturist experiment in music: authentic live performance was combined with the technique of sound recording generated by technical progress.
A similar kind of successful synthesis of electronic futurist music with fragments of folk songs one can find in the music played by the group Virgo In Tacta; inexperienced in the local folk, the young auditory of Izhevsk was listening very carefully to their dance music and compositions.

While his main historical influence was as a composer of instrumental music, in terms of enduring representation in the world repertory Tchaikovsky is surely the pre-eminent Russian operatic composer, despite an eclecticism of subject matter and style that has impeded critical acceptance of his work, especially in the West.
This was an echo of Anton Rubinstein's teaching, and alerts the historian to the significant relationship that obtained between Rubinstein's operatic methods and ideals and those of his former pupil, however critical the pupil may eventually have become of the quality of his erstwhile mentor's work.

This is partly due to the fact that in their name-sake Republic, there is a 43% Mari population and even in the nearby Bashkortostan the Mari culture has survived comparatively well.
The capital city of Mari El is Joškar-Ola and it means "red city." Joškar has another meaning in the Mari language, "beautiful." The capital city has 300 000 inhabitants of which only a quarter (23%) is ethnic Mari, which is not a lot relative to the Republic's population.
