When we keep in perspective that Uruguay is smaller in size than Washington State and has a population of less than 4 million it becomes all the more astounding that this tiny nation (second smallest country on the continent) should have such a rich and pronounced artistic heritage.

 How's Uruguay's music like?
Candombe music can be easily found and enjoyed during Uruguay's carnival season, when "comparsas", consisting on a large group of people with drums, walk while playing their music accompanied by others who dance following the rhythm of the candombe.
During carnival season, Uruguay becomes full of spots called "tablados" which are temporary theaters spread in the main cities, and where murgas, parodists and other groups in the same style perform their artistic expression, their music and acting activities in front of important amounts of spectators.
Music is very important in Uruguay and musicians who play the rhythms of their country transmit a part of the heart of Uruguay's traditions and culture through this art expression.

Music Therapy appeared in Uruguay at the late 1960s - almost by the same time as it appeared in Brazil and Argentina - thanks to the enormous interest and vocation of a teacher who worked with disabled children, Ms.
She is part of the staff of interdisciplinary teams and also holds on an important task in diffusion and training through seminars and workshops and through a weekly radio program in a local broadcasting.
Uruguay is actually "trapped" in the fact of having more than 30 years or history around Music Therapy in a country where there is not a training program, where the discipline is not very well known, and where there are just a few professionals working who graduated from PEMU.

Print news - IPS Inter Press Service
The passion for classical music and theatre in Uruguay, a small South American country of 3.2 million, has been strong since 1856, when the impoverished newly independent nation, in poor shape after years of war, nevertheless decided to build what was at the time South America's premier opera house: the Solís Theatre.
The inauguration of the Solís put Uruguay in the vanguard of the international opera scene starting in the late 19th century, and its opera seasons could be counted among the world's best, said journalist and music critic Barret Puig, who writes for the weekly newspaper Búsqueda.
Classical music concerts began to be held in places with even more unsuitable acoustics, like meeting rooms in hotels, public parks or the installations of the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay.

At the beginning of 1964, when the Beatles wave arrived in Uruguay, the four musicians decided to model their instruments, gears and hairstyles accordingly and formed a band that would constitute an absolute exception of quality in the local panorama of that time.
The musical quality was not as good as before and one particular single "Marilu" b/w "Si lo supiera mama " (both sung in Spanish) was highly related to the Uruguayan carnival (Mardi Gras) repertoire, that little had to do with their previous production.
