Music notation developed in Spain as early as the eighth century (the so-called Visigothic neumes) to notate the chant and other sacred music of the Christian church, but this obscure notation has not yet been deciphered by scholars, and exists only in small fragments.
The music of the Christian church in Spain was known as the music of the Mozarabic Rite, and developed in isolation, not subject to the enforced codification of Gregorian chant under the guidance of Rome around the time of Charlemagne.
Baroque music in Spain, when it arrived, was a pale imitation of Italian models; musical creativity mainly moved into areas of folk and popular music until the nationalist revival of the late Romantic era.

There's plenty of brilliant music on this disc, but its execution as an album leaves much to be desired.

The Canary Islands' Music Festival, an old aspiration of diverse sectors of the islands' society, celebrated its first edition in January 1985, and on the initiative of the President of the Canary Islands at that time, Jerónimo Saavedra, it was declared "European Year of Music", in commemoration of the tercentenary of Bach, Haendel and Scarlatti.
The second objective was to give an international status to the Canary Islands through something more than the traditional "cliché" of sun and beach which typifies the islands.
Its third and last aim was to promote tourism to the islands in a more specific musical aspect, and at a much greater level than normal up to that moment.
