Record companies typically must pay a fee to the RIAA before the audit is conducted, so an album's certification level doesn't necessarily track sales levels exactly.
The Eagles (music)' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales in excess of 27 million copies, making it the top-selling album in U.S. history.

The first official designation of a "gold record" by the RIAA was established for singles in 1958, and the RIAA also trademarked the term "gold record" in the United States.

The KISS FAQ - The KISS Album Focus: Out Of The “Asylum” © Julian Gill
By mid-1985 the album was nowhere near “Gold” certification, in terms of sales in the United States, and was only slightly ahead of the “Elder.” The reissue artwork would mean that of the three issues of the album (1982, 1985, and 1998) the real guitarist on the album is never featured on the cover.
This is probably one of the high points of the album in the presentation of power and ferocity which came closest to recapturing the “Creatures” sound while maintaining a balance with the rest of the music.
Interestingly, also featured on the Wendy’s “Kommander of Kaos” album is a live recording of “Ain’t None Of Your Business,” the song that had been written by Eric Carr, Vinnie, and Gene for her first album.
