Wine Application DB - Viewing App - MusicBrainz Tagger
MusicBrainz is a community music metadatabase that attempts to create a comprehensive music information site.
This IE installation provides the functional mshtml.dll which is REQUIRED to utilize the bottom pane of MusicBrainz (used for selecting between different versions of a song, or for searching the database).
With IE installed, all functionality is working perfectly: The tagger analyzes music files, generates their TRM IDs, compares this with information on the MusicBrainz server, and saves the corrected or discovered tags just as it does under windows.

MusicBrainz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MusicBrainz uses RDF/XML for describing music metadata, which is available for automated processing via HTTP GET and POST methods according to REST architectural style for distributed hypermedia systems.
MusicBrainz's core data (artists, tracks, albums, etc) has been placed in the public domain, and additional content including moderation data is placed under a Creative Commons non-commercial share-and-share-alike license.
However, MusicBrainz uses a binary version of the Relatable TRM server, of which the source code is proprietary.

Thinking XML: Manage metadata with MusicBrainz
The RDF subsystem of MusicBrainz is defined in the MusicBrainz Metadata Initiative 2.0 specification, which defines RDF for encyclopedia entries and for queries.
As I discussed in the previous article, this allows MusicBrainz metadata to be somewhat accessible even to generic RDF agents.
MusicBrainz was born when CDDB moved to a restrictive license, and the developers took the opportunity to redesign the CD information system to be more flexible, to have more features, and to support broader types of information.

Were it to use MusicBrainz, it would have attempted to connect to the MusicBrainz server, to see if metadata about the CD were available.
In fact, the Espra project is doing something like this, building a decentralized architecture on top of Freenet and music metadata to provide a direct link between the artists and their fans, in an attempt to build a gift economy, similar to the patronage system which funded some of the greatest artists of history.
MusicBrainz is developed by programmers around the world, led by our Mayhem and Chaos Coordinator, Robert Kaye, with the source code available as free software.

MusicBrainz aims to create an open comprehensive music dictionary with both web and RDF interfaces to allow the web and P2P communities to cross reference their music content.
MusicBrainz plans to distribute the metadata across a web of trust, to ensure that no single node in the metadata network has an advantage over another node.
MusicBrainz is also an example of a 'Cornucopia of the commons' -- the system will flourish when the community takes an active ownership role in maintaining and replicating the system.

perl.com: Identifying Audio Files with MusicBrainz
The long hex string is the album's unique identifier within MusicBrainz, and the number at the end (4) tells MusicBrainz how deeply to go when building the RDF graph.
This code uses two more functions from MusicBrainz to find out the type of the result (the LookupGetType function) and then to parse out from the URL what type of result that is. We're only interested in AlbumTrackResult type, so we die if that's not what's found.
MusicBrainz returns results in RDF, but that RDF is itself encapsulated in XML.

Boing Boing: MusicBrainz free metadata service gets even better
MetaBrainz is a charitable nonprofit that produces MusicBrainz, a free and open alternative to Gracenote's CDDB data, which is only available on restrictive and cumbersome terms.
MusicBrainz's latest deal with MusicIP gives the charity access to a sophisticated fingerprinting algorithm in exchange for its store of meta-data, making it an even more effective competitor to Gracenote.
MusicBrainz is also supporting MusicIP's Open FingerprintTM Architecture, which consistently and rigorously identifies the sounds in an audio file, regardless of variations in the digital-file details.

MusicBrainz is set of Free Software tools that are used to fingerprint audio tracks in MP3, WAV, Ogg and other formats, and to create unique identifiers for songs.
MusicBrainz works off of acoustic fingerprints, which are granular to the level of a single track, recognizably at different sample rates, and work across different file-formats.
The MusicBrainz community will respond to problems found in the database and fix mistakes faster than any commercial company with paid contributors can, since the MusicBrainz community is global and is never closed for business.

What makes MusicBrainz superior to other audio databases is the very high integrity of its content (a function of its peer-reviewed data entry and well documented style guidelines) and its audio-fingerprinting TRM technology.
Or you can link a wide variety of supporting artists (singers, arrangers, composers, producers, conductors, guest musicians) to a track on an album attributed to a single artist who is in fact a collaboration of two other artists who are linked to that collaboration.

 Welcome to MusicBrainz! - MusicBrainz
You can use the MusicBrainz data either by browsing this web site, or you can access the data from a client program — for example, a CD player program can use MusicBrainz to identify CDs and provide information about the CD, about the artist or about related information.
You can use Musicbrainz right now to automatically identify and label your music files — all you have to do is download and run a MusicBrainz enabled tagger.
Search or browse the MusicBrainz data for your favourite artists, or for your favourite releases.

Limbicnutrition Weblog: MusicBrainz   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
MusicBrainz collects this information about music and makes it available to the public so that music players can retrieve information about the music that is playing.
MusicBrainz also takes this concept one step further in applying it to digital audio files like MP3 files and Ogg/Vorbis files.
The MusicBrainz solution for this is the MusicBrainz Tagger, a Windows application that uses acoustic fingerprints (TRMs) to semiautomatically identify tracks in your music collection and then write clean and accurate metadata to your music files.

First to Fight, Avent Rising and MusicBrainz
MusicBrainz does this by computing a music file's digital fingerprint, based on its length and acoustic properties, then seeing if it can find a match in a growing online database of songs.
As we expected, MusicBrainz had the most trouble identifying songs from rare CDs, those copied off vinyl records and import recordings and other obscure sources.
You can help cut down on the odds of this happening to other users by typing in the right data for your own obscurities, then uploading their fingerprints to the MusicBrainz database (which will require opening a free account with the site).

MusicBrainz is being developed in small evolutionary steps and this Wiki provides an important resource for this process.

MusicBrainz “is a community music metadatabase that attempts to create a comprehensive music information site.” They’re collecting information about music so that your CDs and MP3s can be easily identified and tagged with correct information.
The MusicBrainz Wiki has lots of information for users and developers and so on, and there is a page about FRBR.
Even if this means some shortcomings in the initial data model (just albums, tracks, and artists), leaving plenty of room for improvement, the important difference is that they are getting the job done, as opposed to just theorizing about it.

Mike Linksvayer » MusicBrainz Discovery (II)
One notable thing about MusicBrainz is that Rob Kaye and a small number of core developers and supporters have pursued a consistent vision for roughly six years with very little funding or even understanding outside this small group.
Acoustic fingerprinting is fragile in three ways — it is subject to false positives and false negatives, there is no open source implementation of the concept, and the technology MusicBrainz uses, Relatable TRM, is proprietary and requires a centralized server.
MusicBrainz uniquely identifies artists, albums, and songs, facilitating rich and precise music applications, all on a level playing field.
