Needless to say I was fascinated and attempted many failed lexicon projects, but then only recently I re-immersed myself into the wiki world when doing the previous article about genres, because as I've said many times genre hierarchy is no simple matter.
But in the midst of it all I found the blooming MusicWiki.
So maybe this is all one advertisement so others will hop on board with Wiki (specifically MusicWiki), but to be serious this is just one awesome aspect of collaboration, and with music combined I could not find it too be more exciting.

 KVR: How to Write a 21st Century Masterpiece
As for tools, you probably want something that's not too anal about tempo and time signature, maybe Acid or whatever the kids are using these days.
Or maybe there should be some kind of MusicWiki, where people can create open source music, freely adding and editing tracks online.
I'm not in composing mode these days, but I hope there's something useful here.
