MusicXML (http://www.musicxml.org/) is a dialect of XML that describes music notation.
MusicXML could and should become a universal language for music applications to exchange data—if only application developers would buy into the concept of interchangeable data files.
Prior to MusicXML, the main way to move scores between music notation programs was to export them as Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) packets in Standard MIDI Format (SMF) files from one application and import those SMF files into the other.

 www.finaletips.nu - Michael Good Interview
Michael is the creator of the MusicXML file format and founder of Recordare, which has created the Dolet/MusicXML plug-ins for Finale and Sibelius.
MusicXML was developed iteratively with the Finale plug-in, together with some other translation prototypes that we built for diverse formats like NIFF and MIDI.
MusicXML's success is in part due to its musician-centered modeling of music notation, and the general lack of artificial concepts needed by computers but not by musicians.

 MNMA: Topics: Transnotation Software
Recent developments in music notation software have made it much more feasible to create a transnotation application, one that is accessible and useful to a wide number of people, than was the case only a few years ago.
MusicXML files can be read or written by a large (and growing) number of music applications that run on a wide variety of computer platforms, including the two most popular music notation applications, Finale and Sibelius.
While neither of these applications can display MusicXML files directly and natively, a converter is in development for each of them that converts MusicXML files into either the Lilypond or GUIDO file formats that are used natively by these applications.

MusicXML overcame these technical and social problems to become the first successful interchange standard designed for music notation applications.

MusicXML in Practice: Issues in Translation and Analysis
The initial design of MusicXML was based on two of the most powerful music representation formats from academic research: MuseData [9] and Humdrum [10].
MusicXML’s successful adoption contrasts not only with past interchange languages, but also with other XML formats for symbolic music representation proposed in the past several years.
The first version of MusicXML was primarily an adaptation of the MuseData format into XML form, with the addition of a timewise format to simulate Humdrum’s two-dimensional lattice structure within a hierarchical language.

This is a formal thank-you to Michael Good of Recordare (www.recordare.com) who has driven the design the MusicXML file format, which is greatly needed for the exchange of music scores between music notation programs.
This is also a formal thank-you to all of the developers of other notation programs who took at early lead on adding MusicXML support to their applications.
Without their commitment, MusicXML would have never become the standard in music notation file interchange that it now firmly holds.

NWCForum - Is there any plan to support MusicXML ?
I have found that MusicXML http://www.musicxml.org is a fast growing project and Finale has already included a plugin to support this format.
If the purpose of demanding MusicXML for NWC is to increase the market for Sharpeye software, then I would suggest that Sharpeye inquire directly of Noteworthy Software (I don't work for them).
By way of contrast, native formats such as NWC and MS DOC are in binary form, in which many characters cannot be read as plain text, and the meaning is obscure.
