Sheet music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Authoritative musical information about a piece can be gained by studying the written sketches and early versions of compositions that the composer might have retained, as well as the final autograph score and personal markings on proofs and printed scores.
Music of other cultures, both folk and classical, is often transmitted orally, though some non-western cultures developed their own forms of musical notation and sheet music as well.

Musical-score-generating information processing apparatus and method - Patent 7019204
With such musical score data, the users of the electronic musical instruments and PCs can cause musical scores of their desired music pieces to be visually shown on display screens of the instruments and PCs, so that they can use the displayed musical scores to practice performing the desired music pieces.
As an example, when a musical score storage instruction or musical-score-display termination instruction is given, as the predetermined instruction, by the instruction supply section, the control section makes the determination, based on the right-to-use information, as to whether or not the storage of the corresponding musical score is authorized.
Consequently, the purchaser can choose to purchase a storage- and transmission-authorized musical score data set in a case where the data set is to be used for an ensemble performance, but purchase an only-storage-authorized musical score data set in a case where the data set is to be used by the purchaser alone.

Elements of a Musical - The Score
Traditional musicals carefully varied the placement of song types, while musicals of the late 20th Century showed an increasing reliance on placing ballad after ballad after ballad.
If you are writing a musical, give your audiences a break and vary their melodic diets.
Because song placement is of vital importance in the development of a musical, the composer and lyricist usually work closely with the librettist (the script or "book" writer) to plan each number.

Call me a music geek, but I love curling up on the couch with a score and a recording, getting to know a composition from the ground up: how themes interact, how sections are arranged and what secrets lie waiting.
Inscribed in the score is "In memoriam of Stephen Albert." "The nature of that material stemmed from his death," says Rouse of this former star in the composing world.
The final movement recasts the music of the first in a "savage, angry response to what the second movement is all about." The innocence of the protagonist in the first movement, now having lost a loved one, sees the world differently.

Dolmetsch Online - Music Theory Online - Score Formats
If, as an exercise, you are asked to expand a close score back to its full or open form, remember to adopt the usual layout for the instruments required; transposing parts if the instruments require them and the correct clef (alto clef for viola, tenor clef for tenor voice, and so on) where appropriate.
We can examine another example, the baritone saxophone which is scored in the full score in bass clef but whose extracted transposing part is written up a diatonic 13th (diatonic 6th and an octave) to the treble clef.
This is most commonly done by transposing the music on the fly into F. A reliable way to transpose is to liken the written notes (which rarely deviate from written C,D,E, and G) to their counterparts in the scale the F horn will be playing in.

Music and its branches, as well as humanities, have introduced computing technologies into each phase of production, listening and analytic processes: from the automation of simple tasks to the aided investigation of new aspects of musical knowledge.
Every musical object is internally represented through a series of parameters (type of object, shape, width, position in the staff, etc.) which identify all its graphic-morphological aspects.
In general the elements needed for the music analysis represent a subset of those data which are useful in score printing.

Danny Elfman 's Music For A Darkened People: Spider-Man (2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This isn't a traditionally styled superhero score; it's new Elfman, complete with samples, exotic percussion, and complex compositional ideas that the genre might not necessarily be used to.
The results often led to more subdued music where the themes were not terribly conspicuous, thusly alienating even his core fan base on occasion, who mostly wanted him to crank out heavily thematic music as he always had.
It has the feel of a demonic taunting, and constantly evokes the feeling that the character attached to it is unstable and sitting on a bed of explosive rage.

Still, the Oscars were richly deserved except for the one garnered for the film's musical score.
The score consisted of mostly derivative and generic techniques -- blaring brass and pounding drums for the battle scenes, recorders for the light and antique moments -- and lacked any originality.
The fact is that great musical scores have made a difference in every great film (and even some mediocre ones) since the advent of "talkies." Music is part of the director's technical toolbox.

In a game, the music must act both as an emotional undercurrent and an informative resource to the player, letting him or her know how the game is progressing, what goals have been met and what still needs to be accomplished.
The discipline of scoring a game involves a mind set and an array of technical and artistic skills which are not required of the film composer.

 Musical / Dance Films
Musicals highlight various musical artists or dancing stars, with lyrics that support the story line, often with an alternative, escapist vision of reality - a search for love, success, wealth, and popularity.
Musical arrangers, song-writers, conductors, and dance instructors hurried to the West Coast to be part of the onslaught of 'talking' musicals.
In particular, backstage musicals became the rage during the Great Depression, encouraging the production of other imitators with similar characters: a struggling stage producer, wise-cracking chorus girls practicing and on the lookout for rich husband prospects, and the opening night opportunity for stardom for an inexperienced chorus girl filling in for the leading lady.

In doing so, the structure was reworked, the ending was developed, and music and lyrics were created for fifteen numbers.
Participating in the recording of the musical, Boston Pops violinist Kristina Nilsson called the music "charming." She and the Newton Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Jeffrey Rink, recorded a suite from “Testing” in April.
