Popular music is music belonging to any of a number of musical styles that are accessible to the general public and mostly distributed commercially.
In this respect, popular music differs from traditional folk music, which was created by ordinary people for their own enjoyment, and from classical music, which was originally created to serve the purposes of the Church or for the entertainment of the nobility.
As participatory music, "garage bands" are in a sense a resurrection of the old tradition of folk music, which in premodern times was composed and performed by ordinary people and transmitted exclusively by word of mouth.

Music genre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electronic music that does not fall into the new age, techno or dance categories are often referred to as "left-field" or "electronica" (although there are critics who maintain that the term "electronica" is an invention of the media).
Styles of electronica include ambient, downtempo, illbient and trip-hop (among countless others, see list of electronic music genres), which are all related in that they usually rely more on their atmospheric qualities than electronic dance music, and make use of slower, more subtle tempos, sometimes excluding rhythm completely.
Melodic music is found in all parts of the world, overlapping many genres, and may be performed by a singer or orchestra, or a combination of the two.

 Musical Styles/Baroque
Later, during the early-to-mid 1900s, the term baroque was applied by association to music of the 17th and early 18th century, and today the term baroque has come to refer to a very clearly definable type or genre of music which originated, broadly speaking, around 1600 and came to fruition between 1700 and 1750.
Every period in music has certain recognizable clichés, and much of what is typical in baroque music, specific cadences and snatches of melody, can be traced back to one Archangelo Corelli, who seems to have influenced just about everybody, from his Italian contemporaries and students to Handel who sojourned in Rome from 1704 to 1710.
In the music of JS Bach, the different forms and styles of the baroque came together and were brought to perfection.

All three acts took the entire history of 20th-century (sometimes even 19th-century) popular music as their playground, and they plundered a disparate array of styles with joyous indiscrimination.
Their music points ahead to the '80s and '90s when that history was repeatedly called up via sampling technology and exciting games of musical quotations.
This de facto mega-mix proved that Manilow's musical appetite is so voracious that it exceeds that of his most ravenous fans (and, more important, his most vituperative detractors).
