Pete Yorn is one of the best songwriters I have ever heard; the 14 songs on his debut album musicforthemorningafter are some of the best-constructed pieces of music you'll ever have the pleasure of listening to.
On Your Side is a lush, serene song that uses strings, synths and acoustic guitar to create a dream-like effect; I may wake up before dawn some time soon because this is the kind of song that was made to be heard while watching a sunrise.
The lyrics on musicforthemorningafter are a bit incomprehensible - they're fragments of meaning, the kind of poetry that would either occupy an advanced high school lit class for a week or have everyone throwing up their hands in frustration.

With his 2001 debut Musicforthemorningafter, the world was introduced to a kind of musician who should have a long and gratifying career.
Musicforthemorningafter isn’t a perfect album, but considering the dire state of music it was a refreshing and warm release akin to the likes of Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Jakob Dylan, and the wholly underrated Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees).
Relatively strong for this age from the first note of Life on a Chain on, Musicforthemorningafter makes known that Yorn is an entertainer…even if the fact remains that the album isn’t a classic.

Pete Yorn: musicforthemorningafter - PopMatters Music Review
musicforthemorningafter continually subverts the singer-songwriter conventions that we have all come to abhor-while his primary subject is, yes, love, his approach is anything but maudlin.
He may have learned his songwriting tricks from Bruce and Neil, but he picked up his licks while listening to the Beck, Nirvana, and the rest of the '90s luminaries.
Clocking in at over 50 minutes and boasting 14 songs, musicforthemorningafter is a little too much -- after while all the songs start to sound the same and the assault of guitars gets bothersome, the lovelorn melancholy a bit whiny.

What we’ve come to learn with the very accomplished new Day I Forgot, however, is that a record like Musicforthemorningafter falls from the heavens but once in a great while.

Musicforthemorningafter, the first CD by Jersey native and LA transplant Pete Yorn, is one of the best CDs of 2001.
There have been a lot of cocky folk rockers over the years.
With a simple drum machine beat and Yorn, Vincent and Wood playing all the instruments on most songs, Musicforthemorningafter was clearly a low budget production but the songs are carefully constructed with layers of instruments, giving even the quietest songs a likable, textured feeling.

Drummer by trade, Yorn tired of a supporting role in small bands, fashioning himself into a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist savant who plays most of the instruments on his debut album.
The core sound of Musicforthemorningafter combines vocal influences Jeff Buckley, Paul Westerberg, Alex Chilton, and Bob Dylan with a guitar sound co-inspired by the Smiths’ Johnny Mars and Peter Buck of R.E.M. This core is backed by a solid rhythm section, and supplemented with electronic beats and a variety of keyboard textures.

Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter. CD review
With alt / country kicking up quite a bit of dust throughout the last few years it seems as though a new male singer / songwriter sprouts up each month, promising to be the next six-string coffeehouse sensation.
While South Jersey native Pete Yorn may not fit comfortably into these alt / country boots nor have folkie enough shoulders to hoist up a protest sign, on his brilliant debut album, musicforthemorningafter, he points towards a new direction for a man with a voice and a guitar.
With songs that are touching, some soft-spoken and all emotionally revealing, Yorn's music works as well for the prelude and during the act (whatever that act may be) as it does the morning after.

But that's OK, because his debut album, musicforthemorningafter, is one crazy patchwork quilt of melody and mystery.
Instead, it feels like Yorn and his producers just stumbled across things like the stately piano hook in "June," the "What's Going On" drum loop that anchors "Sleep Better," or the shiny guitar leads in "Sense," and decided what the hell, the songs themselves are strong enough to support just about anything.
It all probably makes sense to him — and, to be fair, there are a couple of straightforward songs here — but it doesn't to me, and I don't even care, because I'm walking around my apartment singing "seeing is believing/ lord knows what he sees here every night" over and over and over.

And while there are folky songs on "Day I Forgot," poppier tunes have more of a muscular sound as Yorn shifts the sonic balance more toward electric instrumentation and a bigger drum sound.
"Musicforthemorningafter" followed eight months later, in March 2001, and as he steadily built a following on the road, radio eventually warmed to Yorn's music.

In an industry torn between artistic credibility and commercial viability, Pete Yorn's Columbia Records debut, musicforthemorningafter, is that rare record that satisfies the demands of both criteria.
After signing with Columbia Records, Pete began recording his album in the garage of R. Walt Vincent's Culver City, California, home and a guest house in the oppressively hot San Fernando Valley, playing most of the instruments himself.
By the time he'd completed musicforthemorningafter, Pete had worked with a series of producers--including Brad Wood, Don Fleming (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) and R. Walt Vincent ("Prayer Cycle").
