Musicology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Musicology may be described as the pursuit of musical knowledge and insight by accurate, objective, and critical methods of fact-finding, analysis, and interpretation.
Musicology has known two main approaches: the historical (the history of western art music) and the systematic (the study of universal principles underlying the vocabulary of music - scales, rhythms, melodies, etc - and of acoustics, aesthetics, psychology, sociology, and other disciplines in their relationship to music).
Musicology is complemented by ethnomusicology, traditionally defined as the study of folk music and of non-western art music, but increasingly seen as an anthropological approach to music of any kind.

As Susan McClary says, "musicology fastidiously declares issues of musical signification off-limits to those engaged in legitimate scholarship." It is a measure of the rate at which scholarship in music is changing, though, that few would any longer consider such a statement to be valid.
Zoomusicology is the study of the music of animals, or rather the musical aspects of sound or communication produced and received by animals.

Although most of the broadest musicology journals are not available on-line, a sampling of peer reviewed journals in various subfields gives some idea of musicological writings: Peer review (known as refereeing in some academic fields) is a scholarly process used in the publication of manuscripts and in the awarding of funding for research.

MUSICOLOGY [musicology] systematized study of music and musical style, particularly in the realm of historical research.
Today, the domain of musicology is defined by universities, where such study is centered, and includes study of form and notation, national, period, and personal styles, the lives of composers and players, musical instruments, acoustics, ethnomusicology, and aesthetics.
Ironically, the study of musical compositions as such, as distinct from the study of data related to them, is not regarded as within the sphere of musicology but rather in the academically separate branch of study called music theory (see theory, in music).
