Musicology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Often based on the work of Theodor Adorno and feminist, gender studies, or postcolonial hypotheses, the New Musicology is the cultural study, analysis, and criticism of music.
As Susan McClary says, "musicology fastidiously declares issues of musical signification off-limits to those engaged in legitimate scholarship." It is a measure of the rate at which scholarship in music is changing, though, that few would any longer consider such a statement to be valid.
Zoomusicology is the study of the music of animals, or rather the musical aspects of sound or communication produced and received by animals.

Musicology (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Musicology is an album by Prince, released on April 20, 2004, which proved to be his most successful in years, reaching the top 5 of the album charts in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and many other countries.
Musicology was the first album in five years that Prince released through a major label (Sony Music) and, being partially recorded in Mississauga, Ontario, was his first to be recorded outside Minneapolis.
The album was certified platinum by Billboard in June 2004 [1] and was certified double platinum in late January 2005.

 PRINCE IN PRINT
Musicology is a potent reminder of his undiminished skills as a soul crooner, rock guitarist and pop songsmith.
Ultimately, 'Musicology' is a kind of flawed redemption, neither inspired enough to be a true classic, nor insipid enough to make it unworthy of your attention.
The album's first song is the title track, a dose of anorexic funk in which Prince adds nostalgic chatter to a gristly bass line.

 ECHO VI/1: Woodworth
In this light, the well-deserved attention that Prince’s Musicology album and tour garnered makes the project seem like a return to form, and a refutation of the critical stance that Prince is past his prime or is no longer relevant within a music industry whose racial boundaries he boldly challenged in the 1980s.
The songs on internet-released albums such as The Slaughterhouse (2004) and The Chocolate Invasion (2004) have much in common with the material on Musicology both in terms of thematic focus and stylistic influences, and it is largely the lack of major-label publicity and distribution that prompted many reviewers to ignore them.
Considered in tandem, Prince’s Musicology album and tour are a portrait of an artist who is firmly rooted in the history of African-American popular music, using his subject position not as an end in itself, but as a platform for exploring political and personal issues relevant in today’s America.

And, in a savvy bit of marketing gamesmanship, Prince is giving away copies of the new "Musicology" album as part of his ticket price, a move that has kept the album near the top of the Billboard album-sales charts all summer as Prince packs 10,000 people or more a night into the country's arenas.
"Musicology" is a solid Prince album, a bit of a throwback to the lush ballads and funk grooves that propelled his earliest work.
After early albums revealed a sexually charged funk-rocker along the lines of Rick James, this album showed there was more to Prince.

The big surprise with Musicology is that it actually IS his best record in years.
“Musicology” and “Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance” start the album off to a funky start, with Prince name-checking Chuck D, Earth, Wind and Fire, and himself in the title track and musically-checking some old-school funk.
There are some sour points, but Musicology is definitely a pleasant surprise, and if Prince builds up from here, maybe one day he’ll create another masterpiece.

Prince - Musicology : album review
For much of Musicology, Prince has a brimful of confidence, but sounds like a man willing to age gracefully, like a jazz-man of yore.
Compared to the Prince we knew, Musicology is almost (almost) secular, with less of the endearingly loopy sex-as-salvation fixation.
Musicology is more than just an exercise in redressing a rep, and convinces that there's just a chance that our Prince may come again.

Musicology is all about the funk - this album is a loving homage to the true funk soldiers who went before him - James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, Earth Wind and Fire, and many others.
My favorite song of the album is the gospel/blues On The Couch, with Prince wailing in his singular falsetto about how bad he wants to be with his woman (you know what I'm talkin' about), who is kicking him to the curb, sentenced to spending the night on the couch.
Musicology is a solid soulful performance from one of the greatest artists in modern music history, and those who would excel as REAL musicians would benefit from this master class in classic funk performance.

The funky sound continues through much of the rest of the album, interspersed with sexual innuendo-laden ballads such as "Call My Name" and "On The Couch." "Cinnamon Girl" is a catchy pop tune, one you could swear you'd heard the chorus from before elsewhere, but may not be able to place.
I won't presume that Prince attempted to create an album that spans multiple decades and appeals to all of them, but from the sound of the album that presumption isn't far off.
Musicology is fairly cohesive, an accomplishment for such an eclectic artist.

Unlike everything he's done since leaving Warner, Musicology doesn't alienate listeners; it's tight and lean, weighing in at 12 tracks and 47 minutes, yet that's still enough room for Prince to showcase his virtuoso versatility.
At its core, Musicology is essentially classicist Prince, as he makes a deliberate decision to play to all of his greatest strengths, but because it's been so long that he's made a record this confident and concise, it doesn't sound like a retreat.

Like most Prince albums, when Musicology is good, it's incredible--when it's not, it just sounds like some recluse mucking about on his own in a recording studio.
