Jonathan's Boring But Useful Site: Musipedia - name that tune!
I needed to find the name of a folk song that I know by ear, but couldn't remember the title of for a copyright clearance form.
Not thinking for a moment that I'd be able to sort this out, I tried the Musipedia site, putting in the basic melodic contour using D for Down, U for Up and R for repeat, and hey presto, the first tune that it found was exactly what I was looking for - Mason's Apron.
Amazingly, you can also whistle or sing the tune to the computer rather than using Parson's Code.

 LibrarianInBlack: Musipedia
An entry can contain a bit of sheet music, a MIDI file, textual information about the work and the composer, and last but not least the Parsons Code, a rough description of the melodic contour, to make the encyclopedia searchable by melody.
The database is not huge yet (under 30,000 records) but it's a good start and an intriguing idea to be able to whistle that song you remember from childhood but can't quite place, and get an identification within seconds.

I still suspect the theme is from some other work that I’m not recalling correctly, or is a variation of such a theme, but so far I haven’t been able to find it in the Musipedia so maybe Luctus isn’t such a failure after all.
I’m less interested in selling a score than in writing one that I feel is worth selling.
