GARDENA Erlebnis    Life in the Garden
Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871), globetrotter, gourmet, writer, gardener and landscape architect, was without doubt one of the most scintillating personalities of his time.
His passion, to transform the family heirloom, the largely uninspiring estate in his home town of Bad Muskau into the loveliest "English" landscape park on the continent, almost totally ruined the genius Prince.
Enraptured by the idea of helping nature to achieve its most exquisite form of expression by creating landscapes that would conceal the gardening work that went into them, he had the course of the river Neiße redirected, which flowed through his estate.

After receiving a Pietist education, studying law at Leipzig and taking part in the Wars of Liberation, he devoted himself to the estate at Muskau (on what is now the German–Polish border), which he had inherited in 1811, turning it (between trips to England, France, the Far East and Africa) into an enormous landscaped park.
