		Although Muskeget historically has been home to large colonies of Roseate and Common Terns, it was usurped over the course of the twentieth century by the more aggressive sea gull.
		The nineteenth-century fashion for feathered hats and the lack of restrictions on commercial hunting and egg gathering reduced the tern population to the extent that it was easy for the gulls to move in.
		Muskeget is an ideal area for nesting, because few mammals live there and human disturbance is also infrequent.

	USS Muskeget
		On 11 September 1942, the MONOMOY reported she was unable to effect relief of the MUSKEGET due to failure to establish communications.
		Sadly, the families of all of the crewmen on board Muskeget received such a telegram from the Navy Department, followed by a letter from the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, indicating that their loved one was missing in action.
		It was probably this attack that caused the destruction of Muskeget and the loss of her entire crew.

		Muskeget (YAG‑9) was built as Cornish in 1923 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Sparrows Point, Md.; acquired by the Navy 29 December 1941 from Eastern Shipbuilding Lines, Inc., Boston, Mass.; converted from a freighter by Sullivan Drydock and Repair Co., New York, N.Y.; and commissioned as YAG‑9 on 3 January 1942.
		Assigned to the 3d Naval District, YAG‑9 performed patrol duty off New York until reclassified AG‑48 and named Muskeget on 30 May. One month later, 30 June, the miscellaneous auxiliary was transferred to the Coast Guard and served with the North Atlantic Weather Patrol into the fall of 1942.
		When she was overdue in reaching home port later in September, Muskeget was presumed lost with 117 men on board.

		Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a VHF radio call from the master of the vessel stating the Midnight Rider was hard around in Muskeget Channel about 10 p.m.
		Friday, the master of the vessel notified the Coast Guard that they were taking on water and in need of assistance.

		The eggs are three or four, of a pale blueish or greenish drab, thickly and rather evenly spotted and blotched with varying shades of light and dark brown, with shell markings of pale lilac, ovate in form.
		George H. Mackay has described the Terns of Muskeget Island, Massachusetts, and in a recent article in the "Auk," he says: "Civilization is continually encroaching upon the places along the coast occupied by the Terns until there remain at the present time few localities adapted for such breeding resorts.
		The number of young birds was unusually large, larger than has been before noticed, which result is probably due to the protection which has been extended to them throughout the breeding season, a condition they have not before enjoyed.
