Bryn Jones, the sole member of Muslimgauze, hails not from the Middle East, but from Manchester, where he cultivated a truly unique aesthetic by blending the timelessness of Arabic percussion with the digital arenas of sampling and dub trickery.
Muslimgauze's early work was dominated by ritualistic instrumentals, in which insistent gusts of arid ambience gracefully sweep through the pulsing complexities of Arabic percussion.
Muslimgauze's relation to dub may also include the same massive intake of pot as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, but his intention was to attain the conviction and focus of the Hasan I Sabbah's mythic Persian religions sect of murderous Hashashins.

Muslimgauze's unique brand of Middle Eastern electronic mosaic has been unsettling the normal flow of things now for some time.
Past Muslimgauze records set up intricate webs of random electronics amongst the exotic percussions; ZUL'M is relatively straight, lifting the percolating and shimmering patterns almost verbatim from their indigenous sources.
And that is exactly where Muslimgauze's strength lies-among a no-man's-land of near-tangible rhythms at once strangely familiar and peculiarly distant.

"Opel" has much more of a rough electronic/industrial feeling to it than many of the Muslimgauze tracks from around the same time, which is an interesting and unexpected touch for the album; while "Shouf Balek" is equally heavy on the electronics, the effect is much more tinny and chintzy.
Rather surprisingly, "Infidel" was chosen as a single from the album; given that it doesn't stand out all that much from any other average Muslimgauze track, its selection seems based on whim more than anything else.

I discovered Muslimgauze through a random purchase of the double CD Blue Mosque, and had been deeply impressed by the originality and intensity of the work.
He liked the idea and several more DAT swaps and a few months later we had completed the Bass Communion v Muslimgauze album, which alas we were unable to secure a release for during Bryn’s lifetime (partly because his extreme work rate meant that there was always a backlog of Muslimgauze releases).
The five pieces completed while he was alive were eventually issued in 1999 on Soleilmoon (SOL 89 CD), and later on I completed two additional pieces that had been left uncompleted at the time of Bryn’s death, and these were released as a companion EP in early 2000 (SOL 106 CD).
