 THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THE HOATZIN
There is no substance to the long-accepted alliance to the Galliformes and the relationship to the Musophagidae is simply that of the two families within the Cuculiformes.
The long association with the Gal- liformes, we believe, was based upon little more than the prejudice estab- lished by the original description as Phasianus hoazin (Miller 1776) and the inability of subsequent workers to interpret their anatomical data.
The link to the Musophagidae seems to be based upon the common possession of a number of anatomical characters (see Verheyen 1956), the vegetarian diets, poor flying ability, general proportions, and similar size.

After a minute description of the skeleton of Opisthocomus, with the especial object of determining its affinities, Huxley declared that it resembles the ordinary gallinaceous birds and pigeons more than it does any others, and that when it diverges from them it is either sui generis or approaches the Musophagidae.
He accordingly regarded it as the type and sole member of a group, named by him Heteromorphae, which sprang from the great Carinate stem later than the Tinamomorphae, Turnicomorphae, or Chara4riomorphae, but before the Peristeromorphae, Pleroclomorphae or Alectoromorphae.
