§5. "Delia; The Complaynt of Rosamond; Musophilus". VII. Robert Southwell. Samuel Daniel. Vol. 4. Prose and ...
In 1599, Musophilus, or a General Defence of Learning was issued, dedicated to Fulke Greville, and, in the same volume, was included the first of the poetical epistles, that from Octavia to Marcus Antonius, which was dedicated to the countess of Cumberland.
Musophilus shows another side of Daniel’s mind—the importance he attached to literature and “culture” as refining and enlarging elements of life.
The poem is a dialogue between Philocosmus, a courtier, and Musophilus, a man of letters, in whom speaks Daniel himself.

Musophilus, however, does have the support of his mother, Tremula, who resists Tremulus' actions as far as she is able, and comments on them.
Musophilus, in fact, spends most of the play putting on one disguise or another: his first appearance, in I.ii is "in the habit of a waterman" (I.ii, fol.
Musophilus' final appearance as trickster (as opposed to his final role of dutiful son and humble lover) is at the beginning of the final scene, when Simplicius arrives to bring him the grant of Trusophilus' land and goods.

 Samuel Daniel - LoveToKnow Watches
In elegiac verse he always excelled, but most of all in his touching address To the Angel Spirit of the Most Excellent Sir Philip Sidney.
We must not neglect to quote Musophilus among the most characteristic writings of Daniel.
It is a dialogue between a courtier and a man of letters, and is a general defence of learning, and in particular of poetic learning as an instrument in the education of the perfect courtier or man of action.

His father, Tremulus, is an aged usurer, who has no interest in learning, and rejects Musophilus is favour of his other son, Crusophilus.
Musophilus has the support of his mother, Tremula, his faithful friend Fido, and the court fool Simplicius.
As there are twenty-nine characters in the play, but no more than eight on stage at any time, some scenes exist principally to allow characters who are doubling roles to change costumes.

C.S. Lewis on Daniel and Drayton
Philocosmos attacks, and Musophilus defends, the literary life, but it is not at all like a medieval conflictus between Miles and Clericus.
Daniel is in earnest: the arguments of Philocosmos were those that really troubled his own mind and his defence has nothing glib about it.
But that does not alter the fact that in Musophilus we find a sort of intellectual intimacy that hardly any English poet had offered us before.

Englishmen have in all times affected a taste for public matters and for scholarship: and this affectation is not ill exemplified in one who was a man of letters, with the superadded qualities of the philosopher and the politician.
Curious illustrations of a normal antagonism between these elements may be derived from Daniel’s Dialogue entitled “Musophilus.” Musophilus is the man of letters, Philocosmus the man of the world.
Philocosmus taunts Musophilus with his empty and purposeless pursuits, to which Musophilus replies by a spirited defence of learning.
