By 1690 Musselburgh had a larger population than Leith, with a high proportion employed in the area's woollen mills and coal mines.
A golf course had been established to the east of the town at least as early as 1672, and many claim it was the world's first proper golf course, with Mary Queen of Scots an early enthusiast in the 1560s.
Modern Musselburgh was bypassed by the A1 as recently as 1987, taking it off the main road into Edinburgh for the first time in 1900 years.

 Musselburgh Links, The Old Golf Course - History
The Old Links at Musselburgh was originally seven holes, with another added in 1838 and the full nine-holes came into play in 1870.
To the right is the main traffic route onto which the Musselburgh golfers sliced their shots and played back to the links using the new brass-soled clubs.
The four and a quarter inch diameter hole became standard during the 19th century, its seemingly random size was just that, it happened to be the width of the implement used to cut the holes at Musselburgh and in 1893 the R & A made the size mandatory.

 Early History of Golf - Royal Musselburgh Golf Club
The Club resolve to present by subscription a new Creel and Skull to the best female golfer who plays in on the annual occasion on 1st Jan. next, old style, (12th Jan. new), to be intimated to the Fish Ladies by the Officer of the Club.
Another claim to fame that the Royal Musselburgh have is to be the club who bought an automatic hole cutter in 1829, which subsequently became the standard hole in golf, though other clubs make similar contemporaneous claims.
On 19th December 1876, HRH Duke of Connaught, Hon President of the Musselburgh club granted permission for it to use the term Royal.

Musselburgh lies on either side of the mouth of the River Esk, where it enters the Firth of Forth, directly to the east of Edinburgh.
The town was a burgh of barony from 1315-28 and it became a burgh of regality in 1562.
Musselburgh attempted to become a royal burgh in 1632, but this was stopped by Edinburgh burgesses because they wanted to control trade in the area.

It was the diameter of the cutting implement used at Musselburgh and the R&A deemed the size mandatory in 1893.
The Brassie wood (a metal soled club) is believed to have been invented here to enable golfers to play off the road surface back to the course from the A1 running along one side.
