"Muswell Hillbillies" was The Kinks’ first album for the major American label RCA.
Just 12 songs (with two unreleased extras on the reissue) revolving around Muswell Hill, Davies’ childhood home in North London, which was bombed in World War II and razed in the name of urban renewal after the war.
"Muswell Hillbillies" is suffused with London themes set to ironically upbeat American country and blues, plus a couple of impossibly catchy music hall songs, "Alcohol," a temperance track, and "Holiday," about a working-class holiday in rainy, polluted England.

Ray Davies had already produced some fine concept albums ("Village Green Preservation Society" and "Arthur") in the late 60s, and "Muswell Hillbillies" returns to some of those themes: the ordinary man or woman, caught up in forces beyond their control "Holloway Jail", "Uncle Son"; the good old days before technology ("Twentieth Century Man", "Complicated Life").
Thematically, "Muswell Hillbillies" is a loose concept album about the gentrification of the Muswell Hill neighborhood.
Overall, the songwriting on "Muswell Hillbillies" is somewhat disappointing.

 Twangzine - MUSWELL HILLBILLIES
Defiantly out-of-step in its time (like all the best music, the Kinks' especially, seems to be), Muswell remains remarkable today not only for its sound ("acoustic ragtime," I've heard it called), but for its weird and utterly wunnerful — not to mention downright clairvoyant -- under-current of suspicion, betrayal, paranoia and, yep, all-purpose government plots.
Many of Muswell's best songs address — more like CONFRONT — this sad, sorry state of affairs ("Here Come The People In Grey," "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues") and how the once-proud victims attempt to cope with their sordid new lives and neighborhoods ("Alcohol," and the early ode to anorexia "Skin & Bone").
But really, Ray and his Kinks have always had a soft spot for society's down-trodden, abused misfits: they were just far too honest and pointed in their examinations of same to score many hit records in the process.
