 Mutagen Summary
Mutagens are classified on the basis of their physical nature and the types of damage they do.
Mutagens are chemicals or physical factors (such as radiation) that increase the rate of mutation in the cells of bacteria, plants, and animals (including humans).
Exposure to a mutagen is the means by which the anthropomorphic animals in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example, gained their forms.

Research Abstract: 1985-06-00 Carcinogens and Mutagens in Ambient Air Particulate Matter: Sources and Trends in Contra ...
The origins of mutagens in POM were investigated further by sampling in Contra Costa County during six seasonal pollution episodes, each of 36 hours duration, in 1982-1984.
A substantial proportion of this excess mutagenicity may be due to highly mutagenic nitroarenes and derivatives, which are not only ubiquitious primary pollutants but may also be derived from secondary atmospheric transformations.
We infer that such compounds were probably major contributors to the mutagenicity of Contra Costa aerosols from the fact that mutagenic activities of aerosol extracts were two to three times lower in a Salmonella strain (TA98NR) deficient in an enzyme required for some mononitroarene activation, than in the standard tester strain (TA98).

FOCUS - January 25, 2002 - PUBLIC HEALTH: Powerful Mutagen Found in Mass. Water
Known as mutagen X (MX), the compound is one of the most potent known mutagens in a toxic soup of disinfection by-products.
In Massachusetts, the lowest levels of mutagen X and overall mutagenicity were found in systems that used filtration to remove organic matter or systems treated primarily by chloramination (adding ammonia to freshly chlorinated water to shut down the chemical reactions that create disinfection by-products).
Mutagen X levels accounted for about one half of the mutagenicity, evaluated via the Ames test using salmonella bacteria with a single mutation that prevents them from dividing unless a mutation occurs.

The Environmental Mutagen Society Meetings through the years have benefited EPA in two ways (1) understanding the mode of action of genotoxic chemicals that are environmental pollutants; (2) gaining knowledge on the current topics on both MOA and risk assessment pertaining to cancer outcomes.
The Environmental Mutagen Society (EMS) is the primary scientific society fostering research on the basic mechanisms of mutagenesis, as well as on application of this knowledge in the field of genetic toxicology and Risk Assessment.

MUTAGEN can be used simultaneously on several gapped genomes, each with different assembly versions, making it possible to start the annotation process before the sequencing and assembly is finished.
The current setup in MUTAGEN relies on automatic data collection, but due to the nature of the system, it could easily be altered to display gene information derived from an automatic annotation system.
