Earl visits an alien world and falls (explicitly) in love with a giant nose (only to be torn away from her by a cadre of vicious fingers and lips).
Mutant Aliens is certainly a fine example, and I can honestly say I learned more about the animation process with this release than I have with any two-disc Disney extravaganza.
The Alien Mutations Game is a nifty diversion, played using your remote, that allows you to mate two animals to create your own "mutant alien." It's a little buggy, and took forever to load on my Toshiba player, but the mutant drawings (all by Plympton) are pretty cute.

Mutant Aliens is a film that you have to admire for the spirit and guts of its creator, but there's no getting around the fact that it often underachieves.
In a way, Mutant Aliens is just like that file cabinet—a wild chaos of vaguely entwined images, powerful in their own way but lost in the whole.
Although the look of Mutant Aliens is often grainy and poorly lit, and the colors are mostly drab, I don't think that's all the result of the transfer.

 'Mutant Aliens'
Unfortunately, "Mutant Aliens" makes the case that more Plympton is not necessarily better Plympton.
Some of this is humorous the first time around but as it becomes obvious that "Mutant Aliens" is running on an empty tank (which, by the way, is how the protagonist gets into trouble), Plympton keeps riding the fumes of the same jokes until the movie finally stalls out.
On his Web site for "Mutant Aliens" (www.awn.com/plympton/ma), the animator offers a detailed production diary in which he acknowledges that both his original layouts for the graphic novel from which the film was developed and the first rough cut of the picture timed out at about 60 minutes.

Also, it's a wonderful book for people who love animation or stories because you can follow the film along with the book and see what changes were made and how ideas come about.

If Mutant Aliens shows up at a theater near you, you could do a lot worse than to take a jaunt over there and give yourself 90 minutes of animated -- and twisted -- fun.
