Mutawintji is also the first National Park in New South Wales to be handed back to its traditional owners.
On our arrival in the park we were met by Maureen O'Donnell, a member of the local Aboriginal Land Council and one of the traditional owners who today jointly manage the Park in tandem with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Despite these warnings from the National Parks and Wildlife Service we were keen to experience this unique place for ourselves.

Mutawintji National Park in the far west of New South Wales is an historic treasure.
It was the first sort of thing in western NSW before National Parks took it over where they fence it all off and treat it like a historic site because of the - all the art in here, like these stencils behind me and around.
Like, the old people knew about Mutawintji for a long time but in 1983, they come out, and the Mutawintji Land Council and other people blockaded the entrance of the historic site.

MUTAWINTJI, Australia - In the culmination of a 15-year fight, more than 500 Aborigines and their supporters from around eastern Australia gathered at newly renamed Mutawintji National Park September 5 for a day of celebration to mark the return of its 76,000 hectares (188,000 acres) to the traditional owners.
In giving back this national park, we return to the traditional owners not only their lands but their dignity, their pride, their history.
Aborigines in the Mutawintji area were dispossessed of their land in the 1860s as the sheep- and cattle-grazing pastoral industry expanded westward.
