  MUTLEY MEETING PLACE
In February 2006 a group consisting of Mutley residents, representatives from local community groups, traders, faith groups, councillors and schools came together with a common aim; to consider the implications for Mutley residents of recent changes in the shopping centre and surrounding streets that have, arguably, affected their culture and quality of life.
There is no secular community space where residents can meet, socialise and share their concerns, and the busy main road of the Plain itself tends to cut the community in half.
The meeting was chaired by Plymouth Sutton MP Linda Gilroy and followed by a short presentation exploring the benefits and drawbacks of Mutley Plain in the present.

 Plymouth Place Names - Mutley Plain
The name Mutley appears here to be a corruption of two words - Gemot-leah - meaning the place of meeting.
At the time of Domesday the name was recorded as Modlei and around 1500 the road we now know as Weston Park Road was referred to as Motley Park Lane.
The Plain element doubtless dating from the time of George III when as a consequence of the Turnpike Acts the Mutley section of Tavistock Road was raised and levelled thereby giving it more the appearance of a plain.

  Plymouth, Mutley Baptist Chapel
George Street Chapel resolved to build a second chapel for the convenience of its worshippers and that this should be in the rural surroundings of Mutley Plain.
Mutley Baptist worked closely with its companions in George Street until March 20th 1876, when over one hundred members who worshipped at Mutley decided it was time to form a separate congregation.
Mutley Chapel was miraculously spared from destruction by the prompt action of its caretakers, Mr Pethick and Mr Trevena, who on many occasions dealt with incendiaries that landed on both the Chapel and the School.

This well-known Wesleyan chapel was located on the east side of Mutley Plain, on the junction with Belgrave Road.
The first chapel for the residents of the Mutley area was described in 1880 as 'a little, low-roofed, fl building' in the corner of a field on the way up to Mutley Plain from Cemetery Road.
A plot of land on Mutley Plain was thus purchased for the sum of £500.

 Hartley Park
The name ‘Mutley Plain’ probably dates back to George III when the Mutley section of the road was raised and levelled from the original ‘ups and downs’.
Victorian buildings, Mutley station (1849-1939) and the Methodist Church (1881-1979) were built on Mutley Plain and tramlines installed.
The river situation was similar north of Mutley and greatly influenced the route of the main road from Sutton to Roborough, and the east west road from Plympton to Saltash Passage.

An assortment of brightly coloured planters and seats have been installed to add a splash of colour to Mutley Plain but opinion is divided over their arrival.
And Brian Mahon, chairman of the Mutley Plain Traders' Association, described the new additions as "on the artistic side".
The new street furniture is part of a wider plan to give Mutley Plain a makeover, funded by £200,000 from a regeneration fund and the Arts Council.
