Mutebi is the oldest bachelor king in the history of Buganda's more than 500 years old monarchy.
It was after Mutebi left Cambridge without a degree that the rumours started about his impecunious circumstances, leading to stories of how he had been reduced to selling double-glazing from an East London council flat to make ends meet.
On the rutted clay road outside the compound, King Freddy, as Edward Muteesa II was known, got to his feet, hailed a cab and eventually made his way to England where he died in exile three years later, in 1969.

In 1921 a legislative council for the protectorate was established; its first African member was admitted only in 1945, and it was not until the mid-1950s that a substantial number of seats was allocated to Africans.
