MUYINGA, Burundi — Head bowed, a 13-year-old girl tearfully recounts one of the most horrifying moments of her short life.
The mother and daughter have come to a special centre in Muyinga Province for victims of sexual violence.
It is one of four in Burundi, and this one is funded by ECHO, the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department, with technical assistance from UNICEF.

The northern provinces of Kirundo and Muyinga, and the Moso region, were the worst affected by severe dry weather.
In general, while the nutritional situation around the country varies from province to province, in drought-affected provinces of Kirundo, Muyinga and Cankuzo, malnutrition increased from October 1999 and peaked in April 2000, prior to harvesting of the season B crop.
In Muyinga province, International Medical Crops recorded malnutrition levels among women and children of 16.4 percent, 20.4 percent and 29.0 percent in October 1999, January 2000 and April 2000 respectively, before reductions in May and June.

The colourful and joyful ceremonies for the consecrations and inauguration of Muyinga diocese took place on Saturday 5th November in the stadium at Muyinga.
The new diocese of Muyinga is the sixth diocese in the Province of the EAB and will serve the parishes in the north-eastern areas of Cankuzo and Muyinga that stretch to the border with Tanzania.

The radio reported that the road running west from Muyinga to Ngozi was closed on Monday morning.
Similarly, the humanitarian worker told IRIN that highway RN 6 between Gasogo and Gasorwe, west of Muyinga, and some 18-km of highway along RN 14 from Gashoho to Muyingi was also closed on Monday.

 World War 1 and 2 - Hehe
The Hehe (also Wahehe) began as a number of independent chiefdoms made up of mixed people who were in some instances related to one another and are a Bantu tribe who live primarily in the Iringa region of Tanzania, numbering around 192,000, with no chiefdom over 5,000 people sharing a common language and culture.
The Wahehe had no political unity until in the mid-1800s, the were unified by Chief Munyigumba of the Muyinga dynasty and became the dominant tribe in the region, becoming famous for their remarkable success in war.
Under the rule of Munyigumba's son, Chief Mkwawa, they encounted and fought fiercely with the colonising German Schuttruppe forces but had little bureaucracy or rituals, myths, or institutions of a civil nature (see German East Africa), and were ultimately defeated, and in 1898 Mkwawa committed suicide rather than suffer capture.

However, the northern and eastern provinces of Karuzi, Kayanza, Muramvya, Muyinga, Mwaro and Ngozi were particularly badly hit by the drought conditions and resultant crop failure.
Kirundo is in the far north east of Burundi, bordering Rwanda to the north, Muyinga to the east and Ngozi to the south west.

Burundi: As of 30 August, the Ministry of Health of Burundi has reported 428 cases and 38 deaths in Muyinga, Kirundo and Ngozi provinces from 6 July 2002 (see previous report).
The situation in Kirundo and Ngozi provinces appears to have stabilized, while Muyinga province remains in the alert phase.
